New Things, New Challenges

Sometime in February I’ve mentioned some back-end tweaking on this blog. Something to do with site security.

I was also at my wits end looking for a new server where I could host this site and a couple of other sites that I manage. For last three weeks that’s what I had been working on.

Looking for a new webhost was not easy at all. It was not as easy as grabbing hold of some cheap flyer printing on web hosting and signing up for  that. I had to pick out one that would best serve my websites needs, at the price I consider acceptable and one that would offer good support since I’m not that extremely well versed on the technical side of we hosting.

After a lot of search I finally found the ‘one’ and I have managed to transfer 98% of my sites there. It was nervewracking but I managed it. This one would be next, so for the following week, please don’t be surprised if there is some downtime.

Hopefully after I get the transfer done, it’ll be sailing smoothly.

Some Changes Coming Up..

I’ve been staying on the blogging background lately, since February came in I’ve been doing a lot of blog tweaking. For one, there was some concerns about site security so I had to make some changes fast. I’m not really very well versed technically when it comes to server issues and I know very little about securing the site. Lol! I was thinking I should probably put on virtual sieves, spam catchers etc.

But after a lot of reading tutorials and a massive help for my webhost tech support, I managed to make a few changes to the site’s set up to prevent it from being hacked and to secure it from malwares.

I was also informed that the site was getting ‘too much’ traffic and also has CPU process issues. I have this site on a mini hosting account so I guess we have outgrown that. While I’m pretty much thankful some people visit this site, I was also left fretting that I have to move to another hosting account or server now.

Anyway, I somehow managed to calm down and now I have subscribed to a new hosting account with a lot more resources. And I’ll be transferring this website to that server soon, before the month ends so expect some downtime towards the end of the month.

I was also (again) contemplating buying the domain Luiinpenh.com and moving this site to that domain. I really really want to do this but alas! for now I can’t. For some important reason, but hopefully, I can do this when the right time comes. For now, I’ll be sticking to this URL – pinaywifespeaks.com.

Not So Glam Part of Being a Blogger..

Ha! An intriguing title eh? Nah, I’m not gonna write anything outrageous. I’m simply going to be a little emo about blogging in this post okay? I get a few questions about how glam is blogging. Some people assume you get a lot of freebies, privileges and what nots. Perhaps for others, it is. but for me it is not. I am no star blogger, nor do I hope to be.

Blogging for me is not about being glam and all. I’m blogging because I enjoy it. It might seem like a chore for others but for me, its a great way to keep me on my toes. I learn new things, and I stop myself from being so bored. And besides, it helps me with my English, a lot.  I do get some invites every now and then, but I rarely get freebies. And I also do not go around asking for one. If I get invites, I very rarely go, unless the event is something I really really want to write about. I figured this differs for every blogger.

Another unglam part of being blogger is the cost. For sure there are free platforms out there but I prefer to have my blogs where I am in full control. And yes, there’s the hosting fees. It’s not expensive but I’m not that rich to keep paying for that, so I have to make the blog a little productive hence the advertising you occasionally see around here. I hope, you dear readers, would not mind that. It does pay for the hosting and keeping this blog running.

Living in Phnom Penh: My Manic Weekdays

Out of pique, I almost decided to give up blogging. At least on this site. Lol. As if, I’d ever be happy without blabbing about this and that.

For the past few weeks I was simply overwhelmed with things to do and at the end of everyday, I was always bummed out. I would literally just drop down in bed and ..have a snore fest. Often times, I only get to check my websites during the weekend, for a few hours only.

I think I should really learn to better manage my time. But the urge to stop blogging just went away. So now I’m back. I always reason that I don’t think anyone would read about how my day is, but what the heck, blogging helps me de-stress. What’s my typical weekday like?

Every morning I would be up early doing mommy things, preparing the kiddo for school and also fixing breakfast for the family. Then I’d have to prepare myself to go to school. Then I’d be off to bring my daughter to school and I’d be in language school till about lunch time. We usually have lunch out or at MIL’s. The past weeks I was also trying to finish my driving lessons and thank God now its over.

Afternoons I have to do things at home. Chores. Which makes me wish I only have uniforms and scrubs to worry about. But yeah, that’s a stay at home mom’s life for you. After all that, I now have to do groceries and later start making dinner.

If I’m lucky to finish everything by 8 pm, then I’d have time to check my email, do a bit of blog writing, then do my homework plus practice Khmer script writing. If I can steal away a bigger block of free time, then I’d do some graphic designing and web construction. If not, that work gets piled up for the weekend.

So yup, I’ve got a full crazy schedule. And if others refer to Mondays as Manic Mondays, for me its Manic Weekdays. I’m not complaining much though. It’s life, my life. Strange yes, that I get really tired, but I’m happy.

If a depressive mood comes over me, I just remind myself that at least I don’t need to do something like this.. yet.

Loaded Moto Taxi Phnom Penh

Hahaha! Happy Monday, everyone!

A Food Blog in The Works

I love to eat. I think most people do too. And Phnom Penh is one of those places where you can eat, eat, eat and not go broke. I love the huge variety of places you can choose fromand the fact that most of these places are not expensive. For a small city, it offers a good number of restaurants where you can sample various tastes and cuisines. Italian, Chinese, German, Thai, French, Nepali, Swiss cuisines.. the list could actually go on..

It might be because of the growing expat population as well as the booming tourist trade that has these various eating venues shooting up. I’m not complaining though. Ha! Far from it. And another thing I love? Those free guides and business listings. It’s easy to find new places to eat. I even have one little guide on my handbag always and check it occasionally for whichever place we haven’t tried yet.

Considering that I’m posting a lot about food here in this blog, and with some readers emailing asking where and what to eat, I’ve decided to go ahead and start my own food blog. I’ll be using the domain GoEatWrite.com. It’s in the works and I’m pretty much excited about it. I actually bought the domain a year ago, and we planned for it to be a collaborative travel-food blog among us friends, but busy schedules just made things a bit difficult to do. But now I’ll be using it and blogging about my foodie adventures.

Go Eat Write - Just Yummy Food Tales

site preview…

I’ll be writing about food I eat and reviewing some restaurants and also I’ll be occasionally featuring food I cook. Lol. Yes, I cook. If I have time, I’m actually mad about cooking. As for the restaurant reviews, we like going in a place as regular customer. I want the regular customer experience and so I could tell it like how it is. I don’t go around telling the resto that yada yada I’m here to do a review, I don’t think that is fair. Also while I like going to pricey (snooty?) restos and enjoy their good food, I find more enjoyment in looking for those hole in the corner, not so hyped places that offer authentic and delicious food.

I’ve blabbed enough, so just watch out for that food blog. Bookmark it – GoEatWrite.

Gallery Update..

Seems like my ongoing gallery update will take a bit more time. No matter how much I push, other things just get in the way. I’m also watermarking all images because I know its just as easy to grab images I actually shot and posted here and claim it. That already happened to some of my images which were downloaded and uploaded to some sites without permission.

Photographer Shooting Sunset

I know I’m not a pro photographer and my photos leaves a lot to be desired but I worked on it, they involve some effort on my part so asking permission would be the least I would ask and a linkback would be nice if the images would be used. I’m not stingy, I just think its the right thing to do to give credit where credit is due. And its even worse when some sites use my images and hotlink them to my server, so I had to get a bit techie and disable hotlinking from third party sites. Even if the process of watermarking all my previous images is a tedious task, I’m going to do it. Mind you I would much rather spend my time mooning over silver jewelry, but this must be done.

So this watermarking thing is holding me up making a really awesome and pretty gallery but we’ll get there. Hopefully soon enough. Just watch out for it.

I do wonder why its such a hardship to properly credit used images like this? See. The image above belongs to:
