Here’s something we’ve been waiting for quite sometime already, after the two countries have signed flight deals since 2009! Direct flights from the Philippines to Cambodia is finally here! Philippine budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air will commence flights from Manila-Siem Reap and vice versa from April 19, 2012!

Visiting Angkor Wat is now much easier and much much cheaper for Pinoy folks. And what’s even better is that Cebu Pacific Air is currently holding a seat sale till January 29, 2012, so hurry and grab your really cheap fares on this seat sale. I think booking for Cambodia flights commences tomorrow, January 27th @ Cebu Pacific Air. You can also check out Cebu Pacific’s Facebook Page for promo updates.

I’ve checked the schedules and for now the airline is flying to Siem Reap on Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday. Flight times would 19:50 - 21:30 for Manila-Siem Reap and 22:30 – 02:10 for Siem Reap-Manila. That’s about 2 hrs and 40 mins of flying, (Cambodia being 1 hr behind Manila time)!

This news made my day. Lol. I’ve been wishing for this to happen since… well ever since. And now if only Cebu Pacific flies to direct to Phnom Penh too. I know, tourists are mostly after Angkor Wat in Siem Reap but still, majority of Filipino expats reside here and Phnom Penh is increasingly getting a part in the tourist trail..so Cebu Pacific, pretty please add Phnom Penh to your destinations soon..

I really should be doing this regularly. I know some friends and a small group of readers who are movie buffs and I’ll be posting ‘what’s showing’ feature regularly from now on. If you’re looking for some weekend and New Year entertainment, check out Legend Cinemas (City Mall) and they are showing a bunch of cool movies at this time. The latest in the line up is Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Huge fan of Tom Cruise, I am not so I was actually dilly dallying about watching the advance screening of his movie, but I was surprised that I really enjoyed the movie (in fact I think its the only MI film I actually enjoyed). It was fast paced, lots of fantastic action sequence, a cool enough plot and of course Simon Pegg’s witty dialogue was in its favor. I also must admit to developing a size-able crush on Jeremy Renner. I didn’t know this guy could be funny, but he is. And he does have that really soulful looking eyes. Ha! But that’s another story lol and I know I kinda have it bad.

Do check out Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Visit Legend Cinema’s website for the screening schedules.

A friend forwarded me this email announcement. I’m sure a lot of people would be happy to hear about this. There will be a career day at HRInc with hundreds of jobs available in the tourism sector. The job fair will be held on September 17-18 2011. HRInc office is located at St. 242 behind Singapore Embassy. There are positions open to both expats and locals. So do check out the job fair if you’re looking for employment here in Phnom Penh.

Anyway, I’m pretty pleased with this announcement. It just shows that the business climate here in Cambodia is improving, the tourism sector is on the upswing so there are more jobs available. I noticed the increasing surge of college graduates here who are unemployed so this is a welcome news. But one thing I admire also with a lot of Khmers, they are very enterprising. A lot of Khmers run small businesses, from small salons, motor home repair, car wash to selling knicknacks and i noticed lots of baby shops opening..So at least even if they are not regularly employed they are creating means to earn and a way to employ others. A win win solution :O.

For those who are into vintage ~ thrift shopping, 88 Furniture is holding a public auction on April 10, 2011 from 9am to 12am and 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Big Public Auction located at the warehouse National Road No. 1, 2km after Monivong Bridge on the right side.

On auction will be hundreds, if not thousands of home appliances, furnitures, crockery, tools, home decor and other miscellaneous items. I think this is worth a visit. I love this shop for second hand kitchen stuff and for sure buying through the auction means huge savings!

Finding the place is easy. Just look for this signage:

Where to find this and that. That’s the usual expat dilemma when moving and living in a new place. Come to think of it, I’ve been here close to three years already and I still find myself constantly doing classified searches. So I decided to compile a list of my favorite Cambodia websites offering classified services and more.

{If you know of other sites not mentioned here, kindly leave a comment or email me via my contact page so I could update the list..}

Classifieds:

(1) Bong Thom – well known classified site here in Cambodia. Offers classified listings as well as job listing. This is usually one of the first sites I visit when I am looking for something. Though the site is not so aesthetically pleasing and sometimes can be confusing to navigate from too much text and bling blings, I have to give it credit for having great categorization. All classifieds have categories so it’s much easier to look for what you want. Another plus is their RSS feeds readily available for you to subscribe. If you have a RSS reader, just subscribe to their feeds and you can easily get updated.

(2) Classifieds Cambodia – another free Cambodia classified site. Easy to navigate and well organized. Plus factor? Thumbnail feature, where you can have a quick view of the items/services on offer.

(3) Expat Advisory Forum – Classifieds – A well known Cambodia expat forum with classified ads listings. Worth checking out. You can also get advice on where to get hard to find items.

(4) Khmer440.com – a lively expat forum which also include sub-forums for Buy and Sell, Real Estate etc. Site can be easily navigated.

(5) IKnow.Com.Kh – popular Khmer classified site with a lot of listings for cars, electronics and real estate. Also features thumbnails of items on sale so browsing is more interesting.

(6) Khmer-Announces – up and coming and features classifieds not only for Phnom Penh and main cities but also for other provinces.

There are also a whole lot of Cambodia classified sites cropping up lately but a lot of the are ‘under construction’ with not much classified content yet, so I have not included them on the list. I’ll be regularly checking them and will add them up once they have more classifieds to browse.

Events – Happenings Listings:

My favorite site for events listings is Lady Penh. It’s regularly updated with the latest happenings so you’ll find a wealth of things to do.

Also a notable website for music lovers - Leng Pleng. A one stop source for the latest live music gigs..

Another web place that is extremely helpful to Cambodia expats is Cambodia Parent Network, a Yahoo group for parents and friends in Cambodia. You can easily ask for help as well as get some leads for buying something here in Cambo. This is where we find information on who’s holding a garage/yard sales.. You have to join the group first and be approved before you can view or participate in discussions.

And if all classified sites you’ve visited and yields nothing, then perhaps the last recourse is good old yellow pages! Check out Cambodia Yellow Pages.

If you are looking for Cambodia Job Websites, I have previously made a post on that. Please just visit the link.

Okay, hold the forks people. Lol! I’ve been getting a couple of emails the past few weeks about air fare promos especially about Air Asia promos. When I also checked my site traffic, it was surprising to discover that a lot of people come to this blog in search of Air Asia fare promos.

I haven’t really been posting about promos much because (1) hahaha I always forget, and (2) I figured it’ll be much easier to get info directly from the airlines site and (3) signing up for seat promo alerts is just easy and free. But if its the request of readers, then I’ll be posting said fare promo updates again.

It’s hardly surprising now that I think about it coz Air Asia has a lot of flights from Phnom Penh now. In fact, with its cheap and frequent flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, I feel like visiting Phnom Penh is much easier.

If someone would ask me to list down the little things I love about living in Cambodia, then it’ll be a looong list. Lol! I guess, I’ve fallen so unexpectedly with this quiet, unassuming yet culturally rich country. And for good reasons too.

One of the things I really appreciate here and I’ve been saying that here over and over again is the wide and very affordable choice when it comes to dining out. In some of my ‘deluded’ moods I even made it my goal to sample all kinds of cuisines and restos here in Phnom Penh for a start. And if you think that is easy, think again coz there are literally hundreds of dining options you can choose from!

But these pocket guides make it a lot easier to make choices! One can almost be confused about which guide to use. Me? I just pick all of them, after all they are FREE! You can get them from restaurants, spa’s, coffee shops, well everywhere!

And they practically cover everything from restaurants, hotels, shopping, travel, maps etc. For tourists and new expats, this is really a big help. It has actually become a staple part of what goes into my handbag. It’s already something I can’t go out without, lol! it has the same status as my phone or my lip gloss.

If I’m looking for some place to eat, or some place to have some happy hour drinks, parties, events, art shows etc, then I’ve got it covered with this guides. If I’m traveling then these guides too just about covers everything from bus schedules, hotels, tours etc. And some of these guides features shopping venues, specialty stores so if say I’m looking for some brembo brakes I could probably find it from here too.

A lot fo these guides have their online versions too. Check out CambodiaPocketGuide, CanbyPublications, AsiaLifeGuide. If you know any other websites offering guides like those listed, drop by with a comment and I’ll add it up =)

Reading the news and hearing our Khmer relatives and neighbors talk about it is just heart wrenching. Last night, in what was supposed to be a happy occasion as the whole Phnom Penh was celebrating the finale of their annual three day Water Festival, tragedy struck.

I’m not about to rehash what has happened, so please do check out this article (the latest as of time of posting) - At least 378 die in stampede at Cambodian festival and the Phnom Penh Post for the latest news.

We actually found out early on last night when one of my sister’s students posted an update on her Facebook page that an ‘incident’ happened in Koh Pich. I didn’t really pay much heed coz I simply assumed there was some of your usual disturbance during large festive gatherings. I didn’t have any inkling that it was something as tragic as this.

Then about an hour later I wondered why I kept hearing ambulance sirens shrieking all over. Our place is near Russian Hospital where a good number of injured were also brought. That’s when we knew, this isn’t some simple fluke or incident. I didn’t get much sleep but knowing that no one among my husband’s relatives was anywhere near there, was a temporary relief.

This morning, woke up early to check updates and what greeted me where photos and they were all grim. Till now I could just manage to look at only a few of them without feeling short of breath. But if you’re up to it, do take a look at this slideshow. Do visit also my friend, Sreisaat’s post. She has some links you might want to have a look at.

There’s a lot of talk now going on about investigations and such and frankly I’m not in the mood yet to get into it. I feel that those victims deserves some justice and though some would point out that this was a tragedy, an accident, still I keep thinking that authorities already know and have even said that they are expecting at least 2 million people to be present so I should expect there are enough contingency and crowd control measures taken to avoid incidents like this..

An hour ago I also passed by near Russian hospital and there is a lot of people there, relatives looking for missing loved ones, families of the injured etc, and I just feel so sad for them. For now though, let me just offer our condolences to those who lost their loved ones and prayers for quick recovery of those who were injured.

May all be free from sorrow,

and the causes of sorrow,

May all never be separated from the sacred happiness which is sorrowless.

–Buddhist prayer

Don’t get me wrong, I love Cambodia to pieces and I consider it now my second home. But there are times I think of things I miss and am on the diet for just because of living here. Sure, coffee here is delish and there’s close to a gazillion coffee shops around, but I miss Starbucks sometimes. I also miss Manila’s humongous malls, I miss Divisoria. I miss those craft shops in Quiapo. And many other things..

Another thing I miss are fashion magazines! I’m not a fashionista, nor do I obsess with brands. But I like knowing what’s in and what’s going on with the world of fashion etc. When I was in Manila I used to stock up on fashion mags and I specially loved Preview. And we don’t didn’t have that here in Phnom Penh. Really, in my desperation to keep myself abreast with the trends I turned into obsessive online surf shopping and even managed to create two blogs for my finds! See Lui-Bloggera and Feminine Reveries.

So, I was pleasantly surprised, no really I was ecstatic to see a fashion magazine one time I was doing my groceries. And it was in English!! Finally, a mag I could read! It’s called the FMagazine, and I was also intrigued with their tagline – ‘The First Fashion Forward Magazine in Cambodia.” I grabbed myself a copy and was surprised! It was actually good. I love the styling, I seriously didn’t recognize the Khmer singer on the cover coz she looked so ‘sushyal ba’ haha, the layout was great. All in all, it was pretty impressive for a magazine just on its 5th issue. I wish to see more articles but the ones they had were good too. It features a lot of fashion trends from abroad intermixed with local fashion finds, places to be and I think its amazing to see local Khmer celebrities styled and looking really fashionable for a change.

I’m making the mag now a monthly treat for myself. And oh, I realized that yeah, this thing is bound to get some comments like, ‘sus, Cambodia is a poor country, so a fashion forward magazine is not really needed now or going high-class is too much for a country where most people earn less than $2 a day..” Some conservatives consider fashion as trivial and too frivolous but guess what, if a community wants to progress and move on, it has to embrace and learn about culture too. Fashion is inevitably part of that. And if you really think about it, fashion encompasses a big industry, one that Cambodians have a serious chance to play a role at.

And besides, having trendy mags like this would slowly open the locals eyes to new things, new trends, to explore more. A little fashion education wouldn’t hurt a bit, right? I think FMagazine’s efforts to introduce new things to locals is highly commendable and here’s to hoping for good things for them.

Previously, I have also received emails from readers (lol! I have readers pala.. I thought only my relatives read this ) about which sites are best to use when searching for jobs here in Phnom Penh. I then came up with listing of which sites are currently being used for posting job opportunities. Surprisingly there are several sites offering this type of service which is a good thing for Cambodia.

There’s room for improvement though and I’ve noticed that most of these sites contain similar job postings, so best check all out and choose which sites has the functionality and interface you feel at ease at. Just click on the site name and it’ll link you up with the website..

CamHr – good interface, easy navigation plus the categorization are a big help. Focused primarily on jobs and recruitment. Good listing and constantly updated.

BongThom – popular classified ads site with job openings section. I like the wealth of information you can find here but I do wish they could improve how the site looks.

KhmerWS – job listings, forums, chat. Clean interface though the listings available are not as extensive as the two sites mentioned above.

EBMCambodia – well designed website, good navigation, easy to use. Good number of job listings plus ability to filter your job search. You can also find language training, career training as well as overseas study postings.

PelPrek – good listing, clean and simple interface. Also features some downloadable resources for job seekers.

CambodiaJobPage – more like an aggregator of several Cambodia job sites. Jobseekers can also post their resumes for potential employers to browse.

Other useful sites:

CambodiaJobs – a blog brimming with information about Cambodia job postings, scholarships, training, volunteer posts etc.

JobsAbroad – excellent resource for teaching, internship, volunteer and job opportunities abroad.

I must have missed this one I’ve been watching out for updates to the agreement between Cambodia and the Philippines to establish direct flights. You can read my previous posts here and here. Anyway, here’s an update to the to-be launched direct flights between Manila and Phnom Penh.

Check out the article about this on the Phnom Penh Post..

Philippine budget carrier Cebu Pacific has been given the go ahead to fly direct routes to and from Manila to Phnom Penh to start on the spring of 2010 (no specific launch date yet) . This was announced by the Minister of Tourism Thong Khon.

“Cebu Air is authorised to start flying to our country in March or April next year,” he said, citing a memorandum of understanding signed by Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on September 16 to open the airways between the two countries.

SSCA Cabinet Chief Long Chheng said the two sides were currently working on ironing out the details of the flights. “I am not sure of the exact date the flights will commence because I have received no confirmation,” he said, adding that an Air Service Agreement (ASA) still must to be signed by both parties.

Now at least there is some developments…Hopefully, these the direct flights between Manila and Phnom Penh will be a reality soon.. Spring months are March, April and May, right? I’m still crossing my fingers. Obviously I hate the stopovers and connecting flights, well its a big waste of time =)

More holidays! Next week, November 1-3, 2009 is one of the most anticipated festivals in all of Cambodia. The pirogue racing along the Tonle Sap, Phnom Penh is one event that Khmer’s look forward to. The whole carnival feeling plus thousands of tourists and locals flock to Phnom Penh to join in the festivities.

Although there is also a smaller scale version of the festival held in Angkor Wat, but the exciting happenings are right in Phnom Penh. Yesterday, we took a stroll along the riverside and whoa! there are loads of stalls in construction, workers touching up on the pavilion that will serve as viewing stand for the boat race, more workers cleaning up the river from floating water hyacinth..

The annual Water and Moon Festival is also called the Bonn Om Toeuk in Khmer. This festival celebrates the start of the fishing season. It also marks the reversal of the current in Tonle Sap river. The most watched out for event is the boat racing, and there is fireworks, lots of fairs and mini concerts.

The Boat Race or Pirogue Racing, the highlight and worth watching. Some 300 boats all propelled by synchronized rowers. Most of the rowers are from different provinces and some from other countries. Loads of people from provinces come over to cheer on their rowing team.

The Moon festival coincides with the Water Festival and for Khmers the full moon means bountiful harvest. During this time, Khmers give offerings, light incense and say prayers to the moon.

I’ve been waiting for developments and updates about this and I must have missed this(:P allow me some slack hehe I was on a ‘Pchum Ben‘ holiday hangover).

Anyway, its finally confirmed that the much anticipated (it’s probably just me haha!) signing of Memorandum of Understanding between Cambodia and the Philippines allowing direct flights between the two countries happened last September 16, 2009. I got this update from my fave Cambodian news portal – Phnom Penh Post. Yahoo! So that’s one step along the way.

The Philippines’ proposal to open seven weekly flights from Manila to Phnom Penh, 14 flights a week from Clark to Phnom Penh, plus 14 weekly flights to the capital from elsewhere in the Philippines is currently being reviewed by the Cambodian government.

SSCA Cabinet Chief Long Chheng is optimistic that both the Philippines and Cambodia will reach an Air Service Agreement by the end of this year.

Great news right? The number of Pinoys working here and vacationing here in Cambodia are increasing in numbers so this would definitely be a big help for us. Shorter travel time and cheaper air fares. Now, hubby is worried if this pushes through I might decide to go on a weekly Phnom Penh-Manila jaunts Haha come to think of it, isn’t that a fab idea?

** Update 12/2009: Cebu Pacific to Fly Manila-Phnom Penh Spring 2010

**Update 9/29/09: Cambodia-Philippines signs air flight deal. Just click the link to read the post. At least now its official!

This news definitely is making my day. I was browsing the Phnom Penh Post (one of my daily morning rituals) and I was reading the article about the national airline (Cambodia Angkor Air), and a short include caught my attention. The article quoted Minister of Tourism Thong Khon and mentioned that,

“He added that direct flights to Manila on Philippine Airlines would start later this year following an agreement due to be signed Wednesday.”

Check out the entire article at the Phnom Penh Post.

Now, isn’t that a terrific news? We’ve been waiting for this for sometime since there has been rumors a few years back that the Philippine flag carrier as well as the budget airline Cebu Pacific has been applying for adding direct flights to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. There is a sizeable Filipino community here in Cambodia and at the same time there are a lot of tourists here in Cambodia so hopefully this could also encourage them to include the Philippines in their iteneraries.

Before we used to come to Phnom Penh via Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or Ho Chi Minh and the trip would usually take around a day to complete because of the stop overs and its such a hassle too especially if you’re traveling with kids so direct flights would really cut short the travel time plus a big savings on the airfare.

That means Manila will just be less than a four-hour trip away from Phnom Penh!!! Hubby is now kidding me that he bets I’ll probably be booking the first ever seat on the first-ever flight! Can you blame me? I’m just too excited as it is..

Cambodia had a slew of airlines all coming and going for the past years. For some reason airlines established here have a history of having financial troubles as well as safety concerns. I’m hoping this would really make a change.

The Secretary of State Mao Havannal have just recently announced that Cambodia plans to begin operations of Cambodia Angkor Airline or the CAA and also to inagurate Preah Sihanouk International Airport (formerly Kang Keng Airport), located in Sihanoukville, on July 27.

The said airline would be operating flights between Siem Reap and Preah Sihanouk province with an ATR-72 plane. This national airline is a joint venture between the Cambodian government and Vietnam Airlines. The government and Vietnam Airlines have also signed an agreement to purchase Airbus 320 and 321 in late 2009 -2010 so the airlines could also serve routes to other countries, including South Korea.

This is definitely a good news specially since more and more tourist are discovering the Cambodia. I am also hoping that this airline would stick to the safety standards so the past airline accidents would not be repeated and it would not suffer the same fate as the other airlines that operated here.
I guess the frenzy about the swine flu hasn’t really reached me yet. But yesterday, I made a call to my mom in the Philippines and I gather there is really a lot of cases H1N1 cases already in the Philippines and they are doubly cautious.Of course she spent a good 5 minutes of our conversation lecturing me about keeping healthy and about the symptoms of this and that..

Here in Cambodia, there is no H1N1 outbreak yet and the likelihood of an outbreak is “very small at this point”, a senior WHO official was quoted. I’ve been browsing the news this morning and I read that Cambodia now has a total of six confirmed H1N1 cases, including one domestic case of the H1N1 virus.

Among the six confirmed cases, one is a Filipino national who was tested for the virus after showing flulike symptoms at the Poipet border. All of these six confirmed cases are currently receiving treatment here in Phnom Penh.

I really hope there won’t be any outbreak, as health services here are limited at best.. Check out the latest updates from WHO.

We just had a long holiday last week with the King’s birthday plus the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. This annual ceremony marks the start of the rainy season and the goal is to predict who abundant the harvest would be in the next year.

This tradition dates back to the 13th century and starts with the royal procession arriving in Phnom Penh. This ceremony is regarded as superstitious but is nonetheless taken seriously by some Khmers. Two sacred oxen pulls a wooden plough in the ceremonial ground and then they are given offerings. Whichever crop the oxens would choose to eat, it is believed that it will be abundant in yield.

This year the royal astrologer said the cow ate beans and corn, meaning both crops will enjoy good harvest. Here’s a video of the recently held Royal Ploughing Ceremony.
