A Food Blog in The Works

Posted by | 0 comments

I love to eat. I think most people do too. And Phnom Penh is one of those places where you can eat, eat, eat and not go broke. I love the huge variety of places you can choose fromand the fact that most of these places are not expensive. For a small city, it offers a good number of restaurants where you can sample various tastes and cuisines. Italian, Chinese, German, Thai, French, Nepali, Swiss cuisines.. the list could actually go on, you’d perhaps need a progene to try it all.

It might be because of the growing expat population as well as the booming tourist trade that has these various eating venues shooting up. I’m not complaining though. Ha! Far from it. And another thing I love? Those free guides and business listings. It’s easy to find new places to eat. I even have one little guide on my handbag always and check it occasionally for whichever place we haven’t tried yet.

Considering that I’m posting a lot about food here in this blog, and with some readers emailing asking where and what to eat, I’ve decided to go ahead and start my own food blog. I’ll be using the domain GoEatWrite.com. It’s in the works and I’m pretty much excited about it. I actually bought the domain a year ago, and we planned for it to be a collaborative travel-food blog among us friends, but busy schedules just made things a bit difficult to do. But now I’ll be using it and blogging about my foodie adventures.

Go Eat Write - Just Yummy Food Tales

site preview…

I’ll be writing about food I eat and reviewing some restaurants and also I’ll be occasionally featuring food I cook. Lol. Yes, I cook. If I have time, I’m actually mad about cooking. As for the restaurant reviews, we like going in a place as regular customer. I want the regular customer experience and so I could tell it like how it is. I don’t go around telling the resto that yada yada I’m here to do a review, I don’t think that is fair. Also while I like going to pricey (snooty?) restos and enjoy their good food, I find more enjoyment in looking for those hole in the corner, not so hyped places that offer authentic and delicious food.

I’ve blabbed enough, so just watch out for that food blog. Bookmark it – GoEatWrite.

Living in Phnom Penh: Celebrations…

Posted by | 0 comments

There are always reasons to celebrate. Just the fact that we can celebrate is a reason to celebrate. Lol. That was a mouthful. I have always believed that everyday is a day to celebrate but there really days that are extra special.

This time of the year is specially hectic with celebrations for us because its Khmer New Year and it coincides with  my daughter’s birthday.

Cambodians (as well as some other countries around the region like India, Burma and Thailand) celebrate a separate New Year from the international new year (Jan 1) and Chinese new year. The Khmer New Year lasts for 3 days but the declared holidays usually start a day before and then a day after the said days. This new year simply means the end of the harvest season and the time for the farmers to enjoy the fruits of their labor and they also await the incoming rainy season.

During this time, Khmers cook special dishes for the family and for offering in pagodas/temples. They also make an offering table and place it on their patios. Offerings usually consist of fruits (bananas in particular), sodas, candies, flowers, etc. I even saw our neighbor place cigarettes, perfumes &  cosmetics on their Khmer New Year offering table.

This is a really merry time for Khmers and they usually hold parties, with dancing and often part of these parties are traditional Khmer games. A Khmer friend told me that this is the time when Khmers really spend their money and splurge. They also believe that wearing new clothes is lucky.

On another note, we had a quiet but super fun birthday celebrations for the kiddo. That’s our rule, during birthdays, we do what the celebrant wants to do as long as its reasonable. Ha! I mean we had to stipulate some ‘limits’ coz she might one day take it in her head to ask for a trip to the moon on her birthday. Lol. I’d much rather she ask for Godin Bass instead of something totally outrageous and one we cannot afford.

For this year, she just asked for a whole day of swimming on a pool, lots of spaghetti and not to forget her favorite double chocolate ice cream cake. Of course, since she had been a good girl she got what she wished for plus some more.

And whoa! this ice cream cake is totally awesome. Sinful, specially for a serial dieter like moi.

Living in Phnom Penh: Khmer New Year, Almost!

Posted by | 3 comments

Yay! Time for my random blurbs. Why is it that now that I am doubly busy, I am more motivated to blog? I’m weird like that. Or perhaps I just have a lot of stories struggling to be told. Hahaha. I know it sounds serious but what I have are just mundane everyday stuff.

  • Phnom Penh was in a bit of a frenzy this past week. The ASEAN Summit was held here so traffic jams, soldiers in full uniforms, attentive police (for once!), journalists, convoys abound. Some universities were told to suspend classes to lessen the traffic jams. And I did have a lot of fun getting stuck in the traffic and watch out for those wang wangs and diplomatic bigwigs and their convoys.
  • And yup, a big indicator if there are some foreign dignitaries/visitors in this country: lots and lots of flags scattered throughout the city. Here’s a big lot of them in front of Chaktomouk Theatre along Sisowath Quay.

  • I’m very very excited. Why? Khmer New Year is almost upon us and I’m always happy when it comes around. Not that I would stop working on my online projects and blogging, but the one week vacation would be a wonderful reprieve for me. And besides hubby and the kiddo won’t have work/school so we’ll all be together. We might go somewhere else for some R & R but at this time our plans are fluid. Bwahaha.. It’s subject to change and follow our whims.
  • My Khmer language classes are going really well. You won’t believe how happy I was the first time I was able to read a sentence written in Khmer. I was practically giddy, I dunno why. Perhaps because I have always thought this language is difficult to learn and here I am actually making some progress in learning it. As of now, I only know about 15 consonants and a couple of vowels and I still have a long long way to go, but right now I’m all positive I could do it.
  • Going back to school, even if its just a short course, is bringing some excitement back in my life. Not that my life now is not exciting but I kinda feel old. But going to school and seeing kids like these in the photos makes me feel a bit younger. Ha! I think there really is some truth to some advice I heard or read before that when you surround yourself with young ‘uns you’ll feel younger. See.. The snapshot below looks idyllic. Sigh.

Rubber Tree Plantations in Kampong Cham

Posted by | 3 comments

One of Cambodia’s biggest industry is rubber production. I’ve known this for awhile, and hubby has also been asking me to go to Kampong Cham province for the longest time already to have a look at the rubber plantations, but I was not really that interested. I was thinking, hmm, I don’t work for Michelin, Goodyear or I don’t even make rubber bands so what could I find interesting there?Hahaha.. Yeah, that’s the silly, ignorant me talking.

Kampong Cham, Cambodia is where most of the huge rubber tree plantations are and recently this industry have seen a big revival and when we went to Mondulkiri last weekend, we had to pass thru this province. And I did regretted not agreeing to go to these plantations sooner. It’s pretty scenic and all you can see are rows and rows of rubber trees. There are rubber trees as far as your eyes can see. So its all green..

We saw how rubber glue is harvested and it was pretty interesting. Workers scrape the skin of mature rubber trees usually on a daily basis, then the small rubber glue drippings are gathered and collected on a little wooden bowl attached to the base of the tree.

I was thinking, how many gallons of that would be needed to make one tire? And I finally understood the Khmer fixation with using rubber bands for just about anything. They have plenty of it as it happens. They have a passionate affinity with rubber bands, just ask my husband who I think secretly believes rubber bands would make great gifts for dad. Lol.

Anyway, I’ve got tons of photos of the recent trip and I’m still editing. But at the rate Phnom Penh’s electric company is enforcing power cuts, I’ll be finished with the editing maybe next week.

Here’s something we’ve been waiting for quite sometime already, after the two countries have signed flight deals since 2009!  Direct flights from the Philippines to Cambodia is finally here! Philippine budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air will commence flights from Manila-Siem Reap and vice versa from April 19, 2012!

Cebu Pacific Flies Direct Manila-Siem Reap Cambodia

Visiting Angkor Wat is now much easier and much much cheaper for Pinoy folks. And what’s even better is that Cebu Pacific Air is currently holding a seat sale till January 29, 2012, so hurry and grab your really cheap fares on this seat sale. I think booking for Cambodia flights commences tomorrow, January 27th @ Cebu Pacific Air. You can also check out Cebu Pacific’s Facebook Page for promo updates.

Cebu Pacific Air Flies Direct Manila to Siem Reap Cambodia

I’ve checked the schedules and for now the airline is flying to Siem Reap on Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday. Flight times would 19:50  - 21:30 for Manila-Siem Reap and 22:30 – 02:10 for Siem Reap-Manila. That’s about 2 hrs and 40 mins of flying, (Cambodia being 1 hr behind Manila time)!

This news made my day. Lol. I’ve been wishing for this to happen since… well ever since. And now if only Cebu Pacific flies to direct to Phnom Penh too. I know, tourists are mostly after Angkor Wat in Siem Reap but still, majority of Filipino expats reside here and Phnom Penh is increasingly getting a part  in the tourist trail..so Cebu Pacific, pretty please add Phnom Penh to your destinations soon..

Living in Phnom Penh: Randomeness #3

Hey, how was your Chinese New Year celebrations? Ours was really fun and merry with lots of food involved. Lol. Khmer-Chinese really celebrate the lunar new year with much fervor. Even local Khmers are now joining in with the festivities! While this is not an official holiday, well, people do take a break. Lots of shops and businesses are closed for three days. So the cities empty out and a lot of people go to provinces to just relax and have a bit of downtime.

As for us, we observed the usual Chinese rituals, offering food, incense and prayers to departed ancestors. Then the next few days were spent eating, playing cards, spending time with the whole clan and it was capped with a road trip.

Now, I’m pretty much tired but revved up. I feel like I’m all in good mood and hearing good music. I guess that little break has done wonders to my mind set.

The food and celebration though has wreaked havoc on my diet so I started today doing vigorous high impact aerobic exercises. I feel really good afterwards and its like my own body metronomes are all in tune and working! And the good news is that when I checked the weighing scale..I didn’t gain any weight. Uh, thank God for healthy Chinese food and the workouts. Lol.
