Little Quirks That Make Khmers Unique

I’ve got about a dozen posts on draft but I’m nowhere near half way finishing them. It must be that really soothing massage I had earlier @ Bamboo Spa or the hearty late lunch we had at Mexican resto – Casa Lika near the riverside. But whatever it is I’m just so in the mood to procrastinate. So what I did this past two hours instead of researching best weight loss supplements- I just surfed the web and ended up in YouTube watching vids about Cambodia.

I found this really interesting and funny video from Spring Roll Fever, a Chicago Comedy Sketch Group and it had me ROFL! I just love those little quirks they mentioned and yes I’ve observed them among Khmers.

There are people who say negative things and tries to put down Khmers {see comments on the said video}, and I just don’t understand them. Khmers are just some of the most charming and nicest people I’ve known. Sure, there are some bad apples in the group like what I’ve mentioned in my previous post here. Just the same as in most races, there are good and bad points but in my experience the good far exceeds the bad.

How I’m Beating Homesickness

Posted by on Sep 11, 2010 in Cambodia, Lifestyle + More, Living in Phnom Penh | 3 comments

Time flies. I’ve been here in Phnom Penh for two years already and I must say I’m doing really well. I had apprehensions from the start and one of the most difficult things I have to overcome and still try to overcome often is home sickness. The first few months I was at wits end wondering what to do about how to do this and that, adjusting to the language barrier, meeting new people, trying to fit in with my Khmer in-laws..

Once I was settled in and I was gradually adjusting to out routine and things weren’t so hectic anymore, that’s when homesickness kicked in. I’m sure most expats living abroad goes through the same no matter how long you’ve been away from home. It’s just a natural thing to miss and yearn for something at home.

But at the onset too I’ve decided I won’t be defeated by homesickness. Living in Phnom Penh is amazing, life is simple, uncomplicated but there sure are times I miss things that makes life complicated. Like huge shopping malls, riding in crowded trains, even traffic (though now, traffic here is getting out of hand too). Mostly though I just miss my family and the food!

So how do I beat all this? Lots of ways. The trick is finding out what works for you. Here’s some tips..

  • Get online!!! Make use of those free services to get constantly in touch with loved ones. This way I feel like I’m still part of their lives and them too. Facebook, Skype, YM etc etc. This are all for free, all you need is an internet connection!
  • We used to have TFC on cable TV at home. But I found that the more I watch it the more homesick I get. Perhaps its the opposite of what others feel, but for me I’d much rather catch up of news and stuff just by reading online or through bits of videos on youtube. So now we don’t have TFC and I feel a lot better.
  • Indulge in crafts, that is if you are the crafty type. In my case, instead of twiddling my thumbs doing nothing or reading on insurance quotes, why not learn something creative? Here in Phnom Penh, I rediscovered my love for crocheting, digi-scrapbooking, drawing.
  • Blog or start a diary. Instead of bottling it all up, why not start a blog and share your experiences. That what this blog is, really. Someplace where I can blab and blurb abou living in Phnom Penh, things I discover, the culture and lifestyle. If you’d rather have a much more private venue for your thoughts, then grab a notebook and start a daily diary. It sure helps, releasing pent up emotions.
  • Make friends! One of the reasons I love blogging a lot is because it has brought me a lot of new things. And the best gift from blogging would be my friends. I think I’d be a little lost without them. Though we don’t see each other daily, we still manage to share stuff through Facebook. Coffee dates, girl take, thrift shopping, spa sessions,  lunch with Phnom Penh friends are one of the things I really look forward to every week.
  • Discover. New places, new food. Living in a different place offers a lot of new things, new perspectives. Rather than criticizing this things because they are different from what you are used to why not try to experience it? This is what I like doing now, discovering, tasting, and learning more about culture, lifestyle and everything else about Cambodia.
  • Cook Pinoy food! Or check out Pinoy restos around. Luckily, we have a Filipino grocery here so getting what I need for Filipino food is easy enough. Since Asian cooking also had common things, I could easily find things I need too from wet markets. If I don’t feel like cooking and craving for Pinoy food, then there’s a choice of Filipino restaurants too around Phnom Penh.

I’m pretty sure there’s more things you and I can think of to beat homesickness, but for now that’s it! Lol! I do have a lot of laundry to dry. =) Ciao! Till later.

Food Trip Friday 19: Pili Nut Taldis

Food Trip Friday Meme

Here’s another Bicolano special – Pili Nuts! Were quite lucky we got lots and lots of pilinut trees around our house so we get our fill of it without buying it. I think this unique nut is mostly only available in Bicol Region and its quite pricey if you buy by kilograms.

This is the Pili Tree.. bow! lol! My dad likes planting these trees coz its sturdy, provides a lot of shade and it lives for a really really long time even if its constantly battered by tropical typhoons. And of course, we all love the pili nut!

Here’s the pili fruit. At the onset its green, then once it matures it turns into black. Bicolanos usually like eating the fleshy pulp on the pili nut. Just boil water, the drop the pili fruit on it, leave it for a couple of minutes then you’re ready to peel it off. The flesh inside is yummy, nutty, creamy and super soft. Some like eating it with something salty, like fermented small fish (koyog) while I like eating it with sugar, then I stick it in the freezer for a few minutes and voila! pili flesh dessert. Uber yummy!

But then again before I get carried away, this post is about Pilinut Taldis also called Pilinut Molido. This one’s home made, a bit tedious to make. It’s a little like marzipan but I reckon it tastes so much better because this one is mostly made of pili nuts.

After the flesh part of the pili fruit is removed, you are left with the shell which is extremely tough like wood. You then put this under the sun for a couple of days to dry, then the shell is cracked open. This is my favorite part. We usually challenge ourselves who can crack it open without crushing the nuts. Then inside you’ll find what we are after, the pili nut. And of course, nothing goes to waste, the outer shell can be used as a firewood substitute. Cool, right!?

Once you have just enough pili nuts, you then boil water the blanch the nuts again to remove the paper-like brown cover. Then you’ll see the nuts, yummy nuts. Can be eaten as is, and its so yummy, nutty. The taste is like a cross between almonds and macadamia nuts, and its like once you pop you can’t stop feeling everytime. But I do take care coz nuts, esp pilinuts are very high in cholesterol! Wohoo..

Now on to the taldis. The pilinuts are grinded and mixed with condensed milk, sugar, you can add mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes 4-1 ratio coz if its pure pilinuts the taldis will be too soft and hard to cut and crumbly. Before its cooked, flavorings can be added, in our case we added chopped calamansi pulp. Anise, vanilla are also good options. I don’t have the photo of the actual making coz my cousin who makes it, is superstitious. She says if a lot of people keep peeking on the pot, they say the pilinut taldis will not harden. So I was not allowed to snap photos. Who am I to argue when I was so anxious to get my first bite? Lol!

Anyway, everything is placed in a huge wok-like pan. Then on medium heat, and continuous stirring until its boiling. Reminds me of how halayang ube is done. Once the consistency is just right, it was removed from fire, then poured over a flat, clean surface. Then a damp cloth or banana leaves is placed on top then using a rolling pin, the pili taldis mixture was flattened to just the right thickness.

She then let it cool for a while then on to slicing and cutting. Now we have our home made pilinut taldis/molido!

This Week: Bits and Tidbits

Posted by on Sep 9, 2010 in Lifestyle + More, Living in Phnom Penh | 0 comments

This week has been pretty hectic for us. I’ve been thinking the best way to cope of not having hubby with us right now is to keep busy. Last Monday, it was Chinks first day of “full day” school. She’s in 2nd grade already and she’s also taking her Khmer classes. I was apprehensive about her adjustment but I think it was only me who was bothered. She made the transition so smoothly that I had to tell myself, ‘Duh? I wonder how I could even worry?”

Our daily schedule is now a bit different. I wake up early before 6 am to prepare snacks and lunch for Chinks. Then I wake her up, get her ready for school and feed her breakfast. School service picks her up around 7:15 am. Then I take about an hour to have a bit more rest before starting to do house chores. Then around 10 am I start with my blogging tasks.

I also get to do a bit of video calling Hi-ace in the morning just to catch up on things. I think its great that we still get to talk almost on a daily basis so I don’t get to miss him too much.

Lunch now is a quiet affair. I don’t even bother to cook anymore. It’s just me and my sister Ouwie, and I would usually just make a sandwich and that’s it. Afternoon is spent resting a bit, then working on some web projects. School service drops off Chinks at around 4:30 pm and we spend a couple of hours playing and roughing around before I start fixing dinner.

I had been also trying to sleep earlier these past few days coz I haven’t been feeling really good. Last week I felt really nauseous and irritable, I even began to think perhaps I have a new baby but alas! I was just wrong. Too bad really but we could try again next year hahaha! Then I had a full scale asthma attack, and the next day I had to rush over a pharmacy to get my asthma meds. Phew! It scares me to get sick here…

What’s Up with Hi-ace…

Posted by on Sep 6, 2010 in Lifestyle + More, Random Thoughts | 3 comments

It’s been almost three weeks since Hi-ace left and I’m kinda adjusted to not having him around now. It’s weird but hey time just flies and before I could even say whatchamacalit 50,000 times he’ll be here already. But I could never say thank you enough for technology, for the internet, facebook, ym and skype. I’d definitely be wallowing in sadness if not for these things.

He has been sending me photos and telling me lots of stories. He is staying in a house just 10 minutes walk away from the university. Town is small but has everything that he needs. He just laments the fact that you have to travel around in the school shuttle bus. He tells me that there is a BestBuy superstore near his place so he’s feeling like he is in a techie wonderland. I just hope he shares whatever he finds in there hehe or maybe sending him a list would be a much better nudge?! Hmm, what do you think?

The place is also a 1hour+ drive from Chicago and that’s where he usually goes during the weekend. I asked him what he does there, does he go sightseeing, shopping, eating?? His answer, ‘No, I like going to Chinatown.” Lol! I said, you went all the way to US just to visit a Chinatown?

Anyway, here’s a photo of him in Chicago’s Chinatown. And yes, that’s a smiley face over his face. Hi-ace is an extremely private person and he’d give me lecture if I dare post his photo on my blog.  He says he’s scared, his ‘fans’ might go beserk if they see him..

china town-chicago

And of course I had to ask, ‘Why is everyone in the picture dark/black- haired?’ Coz, its Chinatown, dummy!!!

Simply Thinking Ahead..

Posted by on Aug 31, 2010 in Lifestyle + More, Philippines, Random Thoughts, Society and Culture | 0 comments

I’ll be a little busy tonight. Mostly coz I’m organizing all my papers about my Social Security System (Philippines)  membership. Yes, I have my SSS and I’ve decided to continue on paying my contribution as a voluntary member.

Why? I’m thinking ahead. I know its not much but having some sort of security, a pension to look forward to when I reach the age of 60, medical, disability, calamity, and death benefits and a whole lot of other benefits. You can also avail of loans like business, housing and calamity loans..

When I was working I was a member and had regular contributions. You only need to have at least 120 months of contribution to be eligible for those benefits. But when I stopped working, I was just too negligent to continue but now I’ve decided to pick up where I left off. I was thinking it will be hard to do now that I’m living abroad, but thankfully banking facilities make it much easier. Now I could just pay monthly through BancNet’s Online Banking Facility.

It’s just another form of saving and I’m glad I’m making it..

Are you an OFW or you simply want to become an SSS member? Just checkout their website for more info.
