Here’s from one of my favorite resto’s in Legazpi City, Philippines – Small Talk Cafe. I missed the food there so this was one of my stops with some friends during my two-week Pinas vacation.

I had Pasta Mayon. I know it looks like your ordinary lasagna dish but believe me this one is definitely unique. Ravioli pasta stuffed with creamy pinangat (laing leaves cooked with coconut cream) and topped with oh so yummy tuna sauce. I think ‘yummy’ and delicious would be an understatement for this dish.

I also wish I had more room for more food. But I just had heavy lunch and the pasta was the only thing I could accommodate. The Laing/Pinangat Pasta and the Bicol Express Pasta and Pili Pasta, Laing Pizza looked interesting too. I guess, I just have to make sure I’m really hungry when I go there again.

Small Talk cafe has a really cozy ambiance (think vintage-retro!) and features some totally unique food. A lot of the food in their menu are a must try. If you’re ever in Legazpi City, visit this place. Located in Albay District very near Divine Word College.

And oh, thanks Yese for the pics (which makes me think what a lousy blogger I make, I always seem to forget the cam whenever I need it LOL) and Khenn, thanks for the yummy treat ). Miss you guys and see sometime soon again.

It’s been awhile. But hey, I’m well, alive and blogging from Phnom Penh again. I did plan to update the site while I was in the Philippines but a busy schedule and a crazy slow internet connection made me…well, lazy. I reasoned I was on vacation so I might as well be on full vacation..

I had a really great time there even if the weather was really dark, rainy and moody. I met up and caught up with a lot of friends and also had a great time trying out Legazpi’s new restos. One of the places we tried was Sibid-Sibid Legazpi. We were with my mom’s bestfriend and since my daughter is crazy about seafood, this is the place she recommended we try. So I’m deviating a bit for my Food Trip Friday entry and featuring a ‘Filipino restaurant’ instead of Khmer food.

a miniature sibi-sibid. A wooden banca used by fishermen..

Sibid-Sibid Legazpi has native and traditional Filipino theme with bamboo and wood decor all around the resto. It reminded me much of bahay kubos . Their menu consisted mainly of traditional Filipino favorites like bulalo, sisig, bicol express and more seafoods.

FISH SISIG: i’ll be having some serious cravings with this one. It’s soooo crunchy and delicious. I had to stop myself from ordering a bottle of beer when I tasted this.

SHRIMP ADOBADO: the sauce. finger lickin’ good. The kiddo went a little nuts with this. She wanted a second helping of rice coz of this.

Mains were priced around P150-P190 per order but the servings were big. Enough for 3-4 persons. And the taste, sooooo deliciously good. We couldn’t help ourselves and bef

ore the meal was halfway, we were eating with our hands hahaha.. All in all, Sibid Sibid is a great place to dine with family and friends. I find it a good value for money, sure it might cost a lot more than you’re typical fastfood fare but its all more worth it.

CALAMARES: very good. I did wish though that’s they’d have something a little more spicy and exotic for sauce. But this was great and a must try.

CAMARON: crunchy and the sauce perfect for it.

FRESH COCONUT: the perfect drink to go with it all..

After that full hearty meal, we all headed over to a local mall and went on a hunt for a gift store to have some baby shower gifts delivered. My cousin gave birth recently and since we couldn’t be with them for the shower, we opted for some gifts delivery service.

I’ll be posting more stuff about our short Bicol trip and oh, after we got back to Phnom Penh two days ago, Hi-ace dragged us for a ‘drive’ which ended up with us exploring Kep and Kampot, Cambodia. I’ll be featuring picturesque Kampot photos soon.

Anyway, for this week, I’m posting the little something I prepared for the Peluka Sister’s lunch party hosted by Sreisaat. I miss eating this – Bicol Express.

We usually use fresh hibe, or those teeny weeny shrimps but the one’s I saw in the market I didn’t a fancy to, so I decided to use prawns instead. Yumminess and just the right spicy hot zing.

I’m still on the SBD diet right now, so to make things a little easier for me, I schedule menus and I also prepared some easy to cook stuff for my sister and the kiddo. I made tocino, spring rolls and longganiza. Why? They are easy to keep and fast cooking and also this is the only way the kiddo would eat meat.

With longganiza as well as tocino they both prefer it to be cooked a bit burned around the edges. It doesn’t look so pretty but it does taste fine and goes so well with the veggies + that sweet-sour Cambodian garlic-chili sauce..

I’m dropping in to just share some good old cholesterol goodness hehe. I know I’m on a diet and has been a good girl for the past several weeks, I felt like indulging a bit last weekend. I promise you, this was one time only.. **facepalm..coz face is all red with guilt** hahaha..

This is an all-time favorite at home. Learned how to make it from my father. It’s so fatty but funny coz hubby who is not into fatty things loves this to bits. His top 3 favorite Pinoy foods in order: Sinigang, Caldereta and this..

Adobo actually has several versions and my dad loves making this coz after making it you can easily freeze it and use portions to saute some veggies {especially good with stir fried ampalaya} and it tastes heavenly on fried rice.

You’ll just need pork preferably with bits of fat. I like using the belly part. Garlic, bay leaf and salt.

How? I prefer using a deep pot as opposed to a shallow frying pan coz when the fat starts popping you can’t really go near it, so a pot is a safer bet.

Just place all the pork, garlic, salt and bay leaf in a pot. Then add water. Make sure the water goes a little all over the meat. {you can also use young coconut water if you want a sweeter taste..}

Then cook it! Cover it and wait till it boils and the water goes all dry.

The once the oil from pork starts to come out, now its time to keep stirring it. If you don’t then everything would just stick to the pot bottom and the cooking won’t be even.

Stir until light golden brown.

You can actually use any sauce with it. But this Cambodian garlic-chili sauce is such as winner for me I can’t resist sharing.

Use a couple of cloves of garlic, chopped chili, fish sauce, sugar, lime juice/vinegar and some water. Mix it all together..And voila! you have a really yummy and finger licking combi.

It’s something people living in a foreign place goes through occasionally. I think I’ve got tricks up to my sleeves already in how to overcome this, but one of my best all-time homesickness relief is to just blog about it.

True, I love Phnom Penh now to bits. I consider it home now too. But there are times I long to see relatives, even those I can’t stand! haha funny how being away turns some of us into weirdos. I also miss the familiar places, those haunts that we used to frequent when I was in high school and college.

When I went home last July, I did checked out places I used to go to but there’s some changes. Nothing major major but its like the whole atmosphere has changed. Perhaps because I’ve been away for a while and I had to chide myself, why should I expect things to remain the same? I think I miss being part of those changes…

Another big thing I miss – Food! More specifically food cooked at home. My father is a wonderful cook. It’s quite usual for us to have a big lunch or dinner at home. A lot of my relatives too flock to our house on weekends just to eat, and Pa always rises to the occasion. He could whip up a seven course meal on a short notice and everything always turn out pure yummi-ness. Sure I could cook Pinoy food here or go to a Pinoy restaurant but its not the same.

I think my cousin Dalz, who just came home from Bicol and posted photos on her Facebook was the one who set this off.. Hahaha..

an epic lunch hehe..- ensaladang talong, grilled liempo, grilled fish, pochero and of course fish and pork Bicol Express..

the goodies up close..

I’m happy to see my parents are well, everyone is doing great but I just miss having the food my father cooks.

Hayy, I just miss you guys – Papa, Mama, Coco, Faye, Dalz and Papa Nor, Ate Tess and family, Ate Linda, and I could go on and on.. And of course, I can’t miss out my BFF’s Yese, Tins, Babes, and Khen.

You could probably figure out what I’m going to do next now…..Checking schedules, airlines and ticket prices! Hihi I really hope we could go home next year. I think I have to find some time on the first and second quarter of the year…

Here’s another Bicolano special – Pili Nuts! Were quite lucky we got lots and lots of pilinut trees around our house so we get our fill of it without buying it. I think this unique nut is mostly only available in Bicol Region and its quite pricey if you buy by kilograms.

This is the Pili Tree.. bow! lol! My dad likes planting these trees coz its sturdy, provides a lot of shade and it lives for a really really long time even if its constantly battered by tropical typhoons. And of course, we all love the pili nut!

Here’s the pili fruit. At the onset its green, then once it matures it turns into black. Bicolanos usually like eating the fleshy pulp on the pili nut. Just boil water, the drop the pili fruit on it, leave it for a couple of minutes then you’re ready to peel it off. The flesh inside is yummy, nutty, creamy and super soft. Some like eating it with something salty, like fermented small fish (koyog) while I like eating it with sugar, then I stick it in the freezer for a few minutes and voila! pili flesh dessert. Uber yummy!

But then again before I get carried away, this post is about Pilinut Taldis also called Pilinut Molido. This one’s home made, a bit tedious to make. It’s a little like marzipan but I reckon it tastes so much better because this one is mostly made of pili nuts.

After the flesh part of the pili fruit is removed, you are left with the shell which is extremely tough like wood. You then put this under the sun for a couple of days to dry, then the shell is cracked open. This is my favorite part. We usually challenge ourselves who can crack it open without crushing the nuts. Then inside you’ll find what we are after, the pili nut. And of course, nothing goes to waste, the outer shell can be used as a firewood substitute. Cool, right!?

Once you have just enough pili nuts, you then boil water the blanch the nuts again to remove the paper-like brown cover. Then you’ll see the nuts, yummy nuts. Can be eaten as is, and its so yummy, nutty. The taste is like a cross between almonds and macadamia nuts, and its like once you pop you can’t stop feeling everytime. But I do take care coz nuts, esp pilinuts are very high in cholesterol! Wohoo..

Now on to the taldis. The pilinuts are grinded and mixed with condensed milk, sugar, you can add mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes 4-1 ratio coz if its pure pilinuts the taldis will be too soft and hard to cut and crumbly. Before its cooked, flavorings can be added, in our case we added chopped calamansi pulp. Anise, vanilla are also good options. I don’t have the photo of the actual making coz my cousin who makes it, is superstitious. She says if a lot of people keep peeking on the pot, they say the pilinut taldis will not harden. So I was not allowed to snap photos. Who am I to argue when I was so anxious to get my first bite? Lol!

Anyway, everything is placed in a huge wok-like pan. Then on medium heat, and continuous stirring until its boiling. Reminds me of how halayang ube is done. Once the consistency is just right, it was removed from fire, then poured over a flat, clean surface. Then a damp cloth or banana leaves is placed on top then using a rolling pin, the pili taldis mixture was flattened to just the right thickness.

She then let it cool for a while then on to slicing and cutting. Now we have our home made pilinut taldis/molido!

I’ll be a little busy tonight. Mostly coz I’m organizing all my papers about my Social Security System (Philippines) membership. Yes, I have my SSS and I’ve decided to continue on paying my contribution as a voluntary member.

Why? I’m thinking ahead. I know its not much but having some sort of security, a pension to look forward to when I reach the age of 60, medical, disability, calamity, and death benefits and a whole lot of other benefits. You can also avail of loans like business, housing and calamity loans..

When I was working I was a member and had regular contributions. You only need to have at least 120 months of contribution to be eligible for those benefits. But when I stopped working, I was just too negligent to continue but now I’ve decided to pick up where I left off. I was thinking it will be hard to do now that I’m living abroad, but thankfully banking facilities make it much easier. Now I could just pay monthly through BancNet’s Online Banking Facility.

It’s just another form of saving and I’m glad I’m making it..

Are you an OFW or you simply want to become an SSS member? Just checkout their website for more info.

Well not exactly new anymore and truth is somebody sequestered it already from me lol! I’ve blogged about wanting to buy a netbook a gazillion posts ago. I wanted it mostly because I like drafting posts even when I’m traveling or just somewhere else other than in front of my good old reliable desktop. I also wanted something where I could read my e-books but since I don’t want to buy an e-book reader ( I think they are too pricey!), a netbook was the best choice considering its small, handy size.

I decided to do my gadget buying in Manila, and I was actually torn between three choices, a Lenovo S10-3 Premium Mini, a Samsung N150P, or an Asus EEE-PC 1005P. What won in the end? The Asus EEE-PC and why I picked that? I loved how it looked, the overall look is sleek. I also fell for the really nice touchpad and comfy comfy keypads. It already came with Windows 7 plus 250 GB hard disk memory. It was good buy for its price. I got it for $490 (about Php 21,900) and since I paid in cash, I got myself a free optical mouse, a keypad protector, a headset, a 4GB USB storage device, and a slip case.

It comes in white, pink, midnight blue and black but of course, I picked the black, why? Hehe so when it gets dirty I don’t see the dirt much lol!

I was also supposed to get an Asus Portable DVD+/-R/RW External Drive or a Nokia Mobile Phone to be claimed in ASUS World in Megamall, but I was just so pissed to go there a couple of times and they keep saying they don’t have a stock until the promo claiming period was over. I was disappointed with Asus about this.

But anyway, the netbook was really nice, a great thing to lug around. It has a really long battery life, about 8-9 hours based on my experience, but they did say if you’d be able to use it for at least 11 hours if you maximize the battery and I do wonder how I could do that hehe..

When we got back here in Phnom Penh though, Hi-ace took a liking for it. It’s a tiny thing and very light so he reckons it’ll be better to bring it with him instead of his own laptop. So, now I’m stuck with Hi-ace’s Acer laptop, but I don’t really mind. I rarely use it anyway now that I’m back together with my desktop. Hayyy, what do you know, I guess I’m that old fashioned

Another one of my father’s specialties – Ginataang Santol. What’s in it? Santol pulp, ground pork, coconut milk, and lots of chili. Okay, just the mere mention of santol makes me drool.

This is a typical Bicolano recipe and one of my favorites. When its season for santol we usually have this a few times a week. And I was quite lucky last June-July-August we have a lot of santol fruit around.

And how to make it? I only have a vague idea, lol! I was too busy waiting for it to be cooked to pay much attention. Would you believe it was still being cooked and I already had a plateful of rice with me? Anyway, dad usually saute garlic, tomatoes first, then he adds the pork, then the santol. Then the coconut cream is added, salt to taste then the chili.. And oh, he said when shredding the santol pulp, you have to make sure you don’t make it a few hours before cooking it and to soak it in water, otherwise it’ll turn really dark..

I wonder when I could have this again? **sigh** On a side note, this made me think what is ‘Santol’ in English? According to Wikipedia, santol is also referred to as ‘wild mangosteen’. Interesting!

You know one thing I like about our place in Bicol, Philippines? Proximity to resorts! If I want to have a swim in the ocean, my parents place are right in Bacacay Albay where we are surrounded by black sand beaches! The town right next to us, Sto. Domingo also has their fair share of beaches. If I want to go for white sand beaches and a bit of luxury, I could just as easily hop on a boat a head for Cagraray Islands where beaches are almost as superb as other popular beach spots in the country albeit more secluded.

Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex is also just two hours drive while Caramoan peninsula in Camarines Sur can be reached in half-day. So, we didn’t really need to go on long trips to get the swimming my daughter wants to have during our vacation.

Another great discovery we made is that spring and pool resorts are popping out everywhere! This is a good news specially since it does encourage more active tourism and it provides jobs and us a great variety of place to enjoy. Here’s one very near our house – Springzone Resort in San Jose Malilipot Albay. We could get there in less than 15 minutes! Went there early morning so there’s less crowds and Chinks had a happy time splashing around. The water though is from the spring so its really really cold and just perfect to cool you down.

Still here in Bicol and have one more week vacation time. What have I been doing the past week? Well, I took advantage of the sunny weather and hopped on a lot of places and visited friends and relatives. It was a good thing coz just yesterday it was scorching hot and today its so gloomy and rainy. Trust the weather to be that fickle.

For the next two days, I’m staying in the house coz I’m badly sunburned and even the best face cream or sun block could not do much to keep the sun burns at bay. My mom, me and my cousin have plans to do something like a cooking fest, its just too bad my brother is not here to sample the cooking. I remember he is always willing to be the guinea pig for our kitchen experiments.

Before long, I have to pack our stuff again, were leaving for Manila on the 8th, and we have two days to visit friends based in Manila and also to do a bit of malling. I’m crossing my fingers and praying for good weather when we fly to Manila. I’m a bit paranoid about flying when its so rainy and foggy and besides I’m with Chinks!

My dad too for sure would suffer a bit of separation anxiety so were propping him up from now on about our leaving. I remember last time we left it was really hard for him and he could hardly sleep for a week and I’m hopping he’d be a little used to us coming and going. My mom though is okay and besides she has something to look forward to coz next year she’ll be visiting us in Phnom Penh!

Hmmm, I can’t imagine our Pinas vacation is almost over, it was good but we do have to get back to reality. I’ve relaxed a bit here and for the past weeks have been relatively stress free so I’m all set to work and take on whatever the next few months dishes out on me. I also miss Hi-ace so I’m eager to go back to Phnom Penh..

Yesterday, we attended another fiesta. This time it was one of my college bestfriends, Yese who invited us in their home in Malinao Albay. The weather has been erratic with lots of rain and thunderstorms here so I was hesitant to go since the place is a bit distant from our house. But Chinks was excited to see Jaypee and my friends other kiddos and I just couldn’t refuse her request to go.

We were invited for dinner, and lol! I’ve already forgotten how much food is prepared during fiestas! I sure ate a lot and judging by the photos we took (hehe I won’t ever post it here..) I feel like I’m already balooning like mad. I’m pretty sure someone would mention reading quicktrim reviews to me.

Grrrr, that’s something I don’t really enjoy when taking vacations here! Either they tell me I should get an 8-5 office job, which I easily rebutt by saying, Thank you, but I’m doing quite well freelancing and really I even earn more than a bank manager hahaha.. or simply telling me I got so fat already!! I know I’m chubby and all but hell, people can really rub it to your face and they do so insensitively. And most who told me I’m huge are mostly those who aren’t thin either. Lol! If anything else, I’m now more inspired to lose weight and when I do, I promise to come back and seek out those who told me off and parade my thin self around.

Haha obviously, too much eating in fiestas is making me delusional..More later..

One of the reasons I wanted to have sometime here in the Philippines is to check on my parents. They are both old (I sure hope they won’t read this! haha) and having some health problems already, especially my dad. He is almost 80 and has survived prostate cancer and still trying to hold diabetes at bay.

From late 2009 till the first quarter of 2010 we were worried for him coz his PSE levels were higher than normal, an indication that his prostate cancer might be returning. Another worry was added when his blood sugar was running up and his diabetes was getting worse. From then on, it was a routine of constant doctor visits, tests, meds and vitamins.

What’s more difficult, my mom says is that since he reasons he’s old already, there are times that he feels wearisome, that he doesn’t want to go through medications and doctors and well just live it out. He could also get really stubborn and refuse to take meds with reasons ranging from, he forgot, to medicines are expensive or simply because he doesn’t want to.

Thankfully, he seems to have weathered the bit of storm and when we arrived he’s looking well. The most recent lab results for his prostate and diabetes are also good. Right now, we are insisting on him taking regularly his health supplements and eating healthy. But sometimes, there really is no reasoning with someone so stubborn and at times I can’t fault him for being like that.

He tells us he is old already. If he goes, he doesn’t have any regrets except that he’d like to see a few more grandchildren, my daughter Chinkee being the only one…Hmm, I envy him I think. Someday, when I’m old, I want to feel the same contentment, the same courage to face what will come..

It was lovely, just lovely to see the place where I grew up. I always thought we were lucky to be raised in a not-so cramped place with loads of space for us to run around and burn out our excess energies. My parents are now both retired and they devote majority of their time gardening. Before we left, my mom was obsessed with raising orchids, bromeliads, anthuriums, and bonzais while my dad loved his cacao trees, fire trees and lately ferns.

My mom though has this really cute collection of small cactuses and I just can’t get enough snapping photos. She also placed them on old tree roots, an ingenious idea if you ask me and it makes an interesting display.

I’ve been helping a bit with gardening and I must say I think I inherited the green thumb and its a good way to exercise. I’m thinking I won’t be needing diet pills to burn extra calories..

I just wish I could have my own garden back in Phnom Penh..

I’m in Bicol, Philippines right now and of course, I’m taking advantage of my vacation here to gorge on scrumptuos Filipino food! Thankfully, I don’t even have to go out of my parents house to sample really good food. Papa is a really really good cook and he’s been indulging us with family favorites the past few days. It’s just no wonder I already have in mind to check apidexin reviews coz for sure, my weight the next few days will make the weighing scale groan out..

Anyway, here one Papa cooked for lunch the other day. Native chicken dinuguan with papaya and pineapples. It was really really yummy! And no, I dunno how to make it, though I observed him burning the grated coconut before squeezing it for its juice to give it a distinctive taste… I guess Iwas too preoccupied with eating it to ask how its made.. hehe =)

Chinks and I left Phnom Penh last Tuesday, July 6th. We made a brief stop in Singapore just so Chinks could hop on the Singapore flyer (photos when I’m less lazy to sort it out ) and for me to walk around a mall. We ended up in Suntec City and wandered there aimlessly. And one thing I love doing in Singapore is to eat in hawker centers and that’s exactly what we did in our limited time there. Eat and eat lol!

Then we took a plane to Manila, stayed a day and thank God I was too tired to go malling otherwise it’ll be another bomb on my wallet! Haha this vacation is starting to get costly, I keep wishing I have some rfid blocking wallets to keep me from spending too much! Anyway, after staying with my brother for a day, we flew again to Legazpi to my parents house. Then after resting for a day, I flew back to Manila to do a gazillion errands. I’m just halfway through it and tonight I decided to give myself sometime to browse the malls and shops..

I also bought myself a netbook yesterday and I was just ecstatically happy coz I had perfect timing! Asus had a back to school promo and I got a whole lot of freebies, cash discount! Really really good value for my money!

One thing, I could say, Manila is as I remember. Crowded, chaotic, hard on the wallet if you stray in malls, and I just love people watching here. Lots of yuppies with bold fashion sense. =) Glad I’m back though I’m missing Phnom Penh too..

Hmm, this week has actually gone by without me getting online or even having the itch to be online so sorry folks, if I was amiss updating the blog. I’ve been hopping on and off planes the past week that I even find it tiresome now to eat or even to brush my hair. All I want to do is sleep!! Seriously. But I can’t do that as I have tons of things to do. I feel like I lost weight without trying to, haha which is really much better than trying use diet pills that work. But I’m pretty sure I’ll gain it all back once I’m back to my parent’s place.

My father just loves to cook and he just pampers us daily with delicious food. I guess that’s why he keeps saying he doesn’t have any right to complain if people living in his house all bear a bit of resemblance to humpback whales.

Thank God, Chinks settled in nicely. She’s in Bicol right now and I’m here in Manila. Flew here last Sunday, did a lot of errands, met friends I really really missed and now I’m doing some shopping errands for Hi-ace. I’m just taking a breather when I saw this net cafe and I thought why not check on my blogs. Tomorrow, I’m flying back to Legazpi and hopefully I could get a day or two of rest without traveling or doing anything..
