Yesterday, we’ve been doing a bit of clearing our teeny weeny backyard coz when Hi-ace returns he plans to build an outhouse there and perhaps place a wooden swing set for Chinks. Anyway, after a few hours of sweeping, Chinks had been complaining and wanting to eat out.

Crunchy Lucky Burger french fries..

That’s my chicken burger, fries and Chinkee’s nuggets..

I asked her where she wants to eat and she says she wants Lucky Burger Nuggets! That’s her usual choice and of course, me I always go for their french fries, fried chicken burger. I find them affordable, a hamburger costs about $1 up add up fries and drinks and you get a bill of about $3. Their nuggets cost about $1.90 for a serving of I think 10 pcs? Shh, truth is, its fast becoming my comfort food here..

Anyway, food in Lucky Burger is good and they serve fast. And I kinda like going local and helping those locally grown businesses. If you’re around Phnom Penh, do try Lucky Burger. At least you get to have the local Cambodian version of McDonalds. Check out Lucky Burger website to know more about them.

Why? I’m thinking ahead. I know its not much but having some sort of security, a pension to look forward to when I reach the age of 60, medical, disability,calamity, and death benefits and a whole lot of other benefits. You can also avail of loans like business, housing and calamity loans..

When I was working I was a member and had regular contributions. You only need to have at least 120 months of contribution to be eligible for those benefits. But when I stopped working, I was just too negligent to continue but now I’ve decided to pick up where I left off. I was thinking it will be hard to do now that I’m living abroad, but thankfully banking facilities make it much easier. Now I could just pay monthly through BancNet’s Online Banking Facility.

It’s just another form of saving and I’m glad I’m making it..

I decided to do my gadget buying in Manila, and I was actually torn between three choices, a Lenovo S10-3 Premium Mini, a Samsung N150P, or an Asus EEE-PC 1005P. What won in the end? The Asus EEE-PC and why I picked that? I loved how it looked, the overall look is sleek. I also fell for the really nice touchpad and comfy comfy keypads. It already came with Windows 7 plus 250 GB hard disk memory. It was good buy for its price.  I got it for $490 (about Php 21,900) and since I paid in cash, I got myself a free optical mouse, a keypad protector, a headset, a 4GB USB storage device, and a slip case.

It comes in white, pink, midnight blue and black but of course, I picked the black, why? Hehe so when it gets dirty I don’t see the dirt much lol!

I was also supposed to get an Asus Portable DVD+/-R/RW External Drive or a Nokia Mobile Phone to be claimed in ASUS World in Megamall, but I was just so pissed to go there a couple of times and they keep saying they don’t have a stock until the promo claiming period was over. I was disappointed with Asus about this.

But anyway, the netbook was really nice, a great thing to lug around. It has a really long battery life, about 8-9 hours based on my experience, but they did say if you’d be able to use it for at least 11 hours if you maximize the battery and I do wonder how I could do that hehe..

When we got back here in Phnom Penh though, Hi-ace took a liking for it. It’s a tiny thing and very light so he reckons it’ll be better to bring it with him instead of his own laptop. So, now I’m stuck with Hi-ace’s Acer laptop, but I don’t really mind. I rarely use it anyway now that I’m back together with my desktop. Hayyy, what do you know, I guess I’m that old fashioned

I guess I let my crazy anxieties get the better of me, coz when I got here I was just proven wrong.  I found Khmers to be very friendly and warm. When we arrived I got along famously first with my nephews and nieces mainly because I could easily communicate with them in English. I remember our first day, Hi-ace’s niece set aside half her day so she could tour me around the market and help me buy the things I need. She had always been ready to help with everything.

My Khmer sister-in-law’s are also very very nice. It’s a pity I can only speak and understand a smattering of Khmer but they never left me out and go to some length using sign language to make me understand.

They are tactile sort too. They are touchy and don’t be surprised to see people holding hands even men! I remembered I was really surprised when a few days of knowing me, one of my sister in law walked around in a mall with me and it was just natural for her to hold my arm or drape her hands over my shoulders companionably. I wasn’t used to that, but I must confess I felt touched that she didn’t consider me strange enough to stay aloof from me.

Same with our neighbors too. They are shy but very friendly.They like hanging about and their kids likes practicing speaking English with us. My sister, Ouwie also told me she noticed a big difference between her students here and her students in the Philippines. She said students her are really very affable and she was surprised when they took it upon themselves to constantly email her or chat with her, even if they are not her current students anymore. It’s also common for them to give her a call, just to catch up and ask how she’s doing and share some news to her.

I find them to be very patient, calm and I’ve rarely seen a fight here in a public place.  Take the case of our trip to Mondulkiri with Hi-ace’s students, we were stuck in the middle of nowhere for several hours because a heavy equipment was blocking the way, and I never even heard anyone raising a voice! That’s something I think we Filipinos could learn from. Of course, they tried to resolve the situation, but in a very diplomatic and unruffled manner. So at the end, we do through without anyone having a heart attack and I could look back and say being stuck there became one of the highlights of the trip!

Of course, there are exceptions. Like in all other places and people, there are those I find annoying. One are those motodup and tuktuk drivers out to bleed you for money. I don’t find them amusing at all, but there are times I feel for them too. But hey! All of us are trying to earn a living too, so I wish sometimes they’d stop seeing barangs as walking ATM machines.

Another thing I don’t really appreciate are some really grouchy and gruff salespersons in the market or in malls. I’ve had repeated experiences of sales persons berating me or snapping at me just because I dared to touch what she is selling! I was like, duh?! How can I buy something without choosing or even checking it out? When this happens I just learned to take it in stride and instead of getting annoyed, I just move on to another store. Well, its their loss anyway, haha when I’m known to be shopping addicted..

Hmm, I guess looking back I’ve also have some minor irritations when it comes to dealing with Khmers, but those are exceptions. In general, Khmers are very cordial and good people. I have great admiration for them knowing what their past has been like and I’m just thankful I got the chance to be here and get to know some of them..

Okay, I would have wanted to check out the newly opened Universal Studios but I’d prefer to have somebody else with us. Traveling with a hyperactive kid is just exhausting. Anyway, Singapore is a small city and their transportation system I found easy and convenient, its clean and for some odd reason I find myself thinking of Insinkerator disposals whenever I see the streets of Singapore. .

After checking in our hotel, we hauled ourselves in a cab and went on to Singapore Flyer. It was drizzling a bit and gloomy, and I was thinking it should have been better if we went there in the evening. Singapore Flyer is in this huge, mall-like complex. There are lots of shops, restos, and nice views all around.

Ticket costs S$29.50 for adults and S$20.65 for the kiddo. We got into the tube and prepared ourselves to be dizzy! But I thought wrong, I couldn’t even feel it move! All I know was that we were moving higher up and the views getting fantastic by each minute. One round takes about 20 minutes and we had a cool time snapping photos. It was lucky too that it was just Chinks me and another couple with one kid on the big capsule.

I  resemble this right now. Really! Except I must say, I’m better looking..lol!

I guess I’m feeling melancholic about not having Hi-ace here and this is not so good for me. When I’m feeling like this I tend to binge. Till now I can’t believe I went on a ice cream and pizza shopping spree the day after hubby left? I ate a pint of ice cream and one whole double pizza just by myself, and I felt horrible afterwards, like I could never get up anymore..

Thankfully, Ouwie and Chinks are with me and keep dragging me everywhere. One lucky thing too, MIL keeps bringing us food, cooked food and fruits so we have no need to cook most of the time. I’m also happy I’ve got friends here in Phnom Penh who I could go out with, pass the time with coffee, girl talk, and thrifting!

I’m keeping busy with my multitude of blogs and I’m ecstatic about some blog experiments I’ve been making. I’ve got a couple of new blogs needing a lot of tweaking and I’m having a grand time doing so. I’m also helping out a cousin with a web project and another cousin with his medical job search. Hmm, my sched is a bit full, so why am I feeling so lazy and bone tired?

Perhaps, I’m in need of some pampering? I should visit a spa and have a scrub or something.. More soon..

Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex is also just two hours drive while Caramoan peninsula in Camarines Sur can be reached in half-day. So, we didn’t really need to go on long trips to get the swimming my daughter wants to have during our vacation.

Another great discovery we made is that spring and pool resorts are popping out everywhere! This is a good news specially since it does encourage more active tourism and it provides jobs and us a great variety of place to enjoy. Here’s one very near our house – Springzone Resort in San Jose Malilipot Albay. We could get there in less than 15 minutes! Went there early morning so there’s less crowds and Chinks had a happy time splashing around. The water though is from the spring so its really really cold and just perfect to cool you down.

I was looking for a cartoon to let you on how I look and feel today and I think this comes close. I know she looks about 10 years old, but just use your imagination and add up about two decades and that’ll be me..

Chinks and I got back from the Philippines on August 11th. We made another brief stop in Singapore then we took the night flight to Phnom Penh. We had a bit of a scare when there was engine shut down right before the plane took off but thankfully the delay was just less than two hours. But it was frightening, really. I’m just lucky Chinks goes right into sleep whenever she boards a plane so she was oblivious to everything. In any case, we got home safe and sound. The vacation was great but it felt so good to back in Phnom Penh and seeing Hi-ace, my sister Ouwie and my in-laws.

Once I got here I got busy cleaning, doing laundry and also preparing Hi-ace’s stuff. Then yesterday, we brought him to the airport for his flight to Taipei then on to LA. I miss him already, I don’t have anyone to fight banter with hehe.. He’ll be gone till December 21st so I feel really really weird right now. But we’ll manage for the next four months and thankfully my mother in law constantly checks on us, bringing us food and even groceries hehe lucky me! Also, my Khmer nieces and nephew are at my ‘beck and call’ in case we need something or have an errand to run.

I owe you guys more updates, and it’ll be coming in the next few days. It will mainly be about our vacation =).. More later..

There are times I have in mind to write a post about serious stuff like term life insurance quotes but more often than not I stop myself, coz I keep thinking, duh! stuff like that would not interest anyone, its boring..

Thankfully, as a mom there are a lot more things (some maybe mundane. .) that I could blurb about. One thing I like writing about is my daughter’s advertures and misadvertures and her funny quips. Oh, she does say and do a lot of funny things, some I even forget about, but there sure are things that stand out. Like this one..a word of warning: some ultra sensitive folks might find the topic of ‘poop’ a put off..

On to the story..right now, were on vacation and staying in my parents house in Bicol, Philippines and Chinks have taken to eating a lot and when we arrived she had a hard time following her regular ‘poop’ schedule. I guess the few days of travelling threw her off the routine. But anyway, after two days here, she was in the bathroom trying to err lay her golden eggs without much success.

I figured she was having a hard time so I stayed with her..I’ve been plying her with fluids the past few days to make things easier, but she was still having a hard time. I guess she was getting frustrated that she blurted out, “Mommy, all the things I ate is here in my tummy and not coming out”, but she wouldn’t budge from the toilet seat. And when she was just about to poop, she shouted excitedly, ‘Mommy!!! It’s all ready to blast off!’ I guess, its so like her to describe it as something similar to a space ship being launch in space..

Lol! The joys of having a child..

We were invited for dinner, and lol! I’ve already forgotten how much food is prepared during fiestas! I sure ate a lot and judging by the photos we took (hehe I won’t ever post it here..) I feel like I’m already balooning like mad. I’m pretty sure someone would mention reading quicktrim reviews to me.

Grrrr, that’s something I don’t really enjoy when taking vacations here! Either they tell me I should get an 8-5 office job, which I easily rebutt by saying, Thank you, but I’m doing quite well freelancing and really I even earn more than a bank manager hahaha.. or simply telling me I got so fat already!! I know I’m chubby and all but hell, people can really rub it to your face and they do so insensitively. And most who told me I’m huge are mostly those who aren’t thin either. Lol! If anything else, I’m now more inspired to lose weight and when I do, I promise to come back and seek out those who told me off and parade my thin self around.

Haha obviously, too much eating in fiestas is making me delusional..More later..

From late 2009 till the first quarter of 2010 we were worried for him coz his PSE levels were higher than normal, an indication that his prostate cancer might be returning. Another worry was added when his blood sugar was running up and his diabetes was getting worse. From then on, it was a routine of constant doctor visits, tests, meds and vitamins.

What’s more difficult, my mom says is that since he reasons he’s old already, there are times that he feels wearisome, that he doesn’t want to go through medications and doctors and well just live it out. He could also get really stubborn and refuse to take meds with reasons ranging from, he forgot, to medicines are expensive or simply because he doesn’t want to.

Thankfully, he seems to have weathered the bit of storm and when we arrived he’s looking well. The most recent lab results for his prostate and diabetes are also good. Right now, we are insisting on him taking regularly his health supplements and eating healthy. But sometimes, there really is no reasoning with someone so stubborn and at times I can’t fault him for being like that.

He tells us he is old already. If he goes, he doesn’t have any regrets except that he’d like to see a few more grandchildren, my daughter Chinkee being the only one…Hmm, I envy him I think. Someday, when I’m old, I want to feel the same contentment, the same courage to face what will come..

On our brief stop there before flying to Manila, Chinks and I mostly ate in hawker centers. I picked a hotel very near Lavender MRT Station and it was an inspired choice since there was a big food hawker centre right across the hotel. Suffice it to say we ate lots and lots without spending too much and before we left I kept wishing I had time to spare to visit the hotel gym and burn some calories even with just a dip bar. Anyway, here’s some photos..

I’m in Bicol, Philippines right now and of course, I’m taking advantage of my vacation here to gorge on scrumptuos Filipino food! Thankfully, I don’t even have to go out of my parents house to sample really good food. Papa is a really really good cook and he’s been indulging us with family favorites the past few days. It’s just no wonder I already have in mind to check apidexin reviews coz for sure, my weight the next few days will make the weighing scale groan out..

Anyway, here one Papa cooked for lunch the other day. Native chicken dinuguan with papaya and pineapples. It was really really yummy! And no, I dunno how to make it, though I observed him burning the grated coconut before squeezing it for its juice to give it a distinctive taste… I guess Iwas too preoccupied with eating it to ask how its made.. hehe =)

I wanted to eat it so badly coz I missed it and I really enjoyed having it too but a few minutes afterwards, I started to feel guilty! And  haven’t even walked out of the shop yet and I was already thinking of what safe weight loss pills I could take! I’m seriously getting paranoid and crazy about losing weight.

Lol! And it doesn’t help too that relatives I meet keep saying, ‘Uyy ha, you’ve gained a lot of weight!” Argghhh! Save me!

Then we took a plane to Manila, stayed a day and thank God I was too tired to go malling otherwise it’ll be another bomb on my wallet! Haha this vacation is starting to get costly, I keep wishing I have some rfid blocking wallets to keep me from spending too much! Anyway, after staying with my brother for a day, we flew again to Legazpi to my parents house. Then after resting for a day, I flew back to Manila to do a gazillion errands. I’m just halfway through it and tonight I decided to give myself sometime to browse the malls and shops..

I also bought myself a netbook yesterday and I was just ecstatically happy coz I had perfect timing! Asus had a back to school promo and I got a whole lot of freebies, cash discount! Really really good value for my money!

One thing, I could say, Manila is as I remember. Crowded, chaotic, hard on the wallet if you stray in malls, and I just love people watching here. Lots of yuppies with bold fashion sense. =) Glad I’m back though I’m missing Phnom Penh too..

My father just loves to cook and he just pampers us daily with delicious food. I guess that’s why he keeps saying he doesn’t have any right to complain if people living in his house all bear a bit of resemblance to humpback whales.

Thank God, Chinks settled in nicely. She’s in Bicol right now and I’m here in Manila. Flew here last Sunday, did a lot of errands, met friends I really really missed and now I’m doing some shopping errands for Hi-ace. I’m just taking a breather when I saw this net cafe and I thought why not check on my blogs. Tomorrow, I’m flying back to Legazpi and hopefully I could get a day or two of rest without traveling or doing anything..

• Eat Jolli hotdog and Burger Steak. I never thought I’d miss these, but I’m craving this really badly.
• Go to Divisoria for some fabrics! I’m itching to have a lot of clothes sewn and to try making some bags myself.
• Go to Quiapo for crafting materials.
• Shop like mad.
• Shop more..
• Go malling. I miss Greenbelt, Glorieta and Megamall..{I don’t miss Robinson’s though, I always get lost there lol!}
• Visit my friends, Ihls, Chie, Alphs and see their cutie kiddos.
• Visit my college buddies, and join a fiesta.. I’m quite lucky with the timing, its fiesta in two of my friends town this July so I could join! It’s been like 10 years since I’ve been to a fiesta and I think Chinks would enjoy that..
• Eat all flavors of pizza in Sbarro
• Have some Krispy Kremes or GoNuts Donuts
• Buy a lot of DVD’s
• Have a Coke Float in McDonalds
• Watch a movie in big screen for a change.

Oh, and I just noticed, my list is all about eating and shopping lol! nothing new really..

As it is I have a lot of chores to do too..

• Apply for another copy of my school transcript of records since I lost my copy and I’ll be needing to start school again.
• Get all docs I need to have for school
• Shop for all things Hi-ace needs. He swears he cannot survive without a barong. He had dozens already and he asked me to buy him a couple more sets for work and have it sewn by his favorite tailor in my province. {He’s not that demanding, isn’t he?}
• Take care of some banking things.
• Check my parents car’s insurance, if its current. I should be looking for the cheapest auto insurance so the payments will be more manageable;
• Buy a netbook, a portable DVDRW drive, an external hard disk, a case for my old laptop hard disk so I could still use it.
• Have a check up with my OB-Gyne.
• Have my mole checked and if it’s possible to remove it by laser, remove it then.
• And that’s just the start of it..

He also told me there are of course, contractors who cheat, since those who go by this route rarely take the time to be actively involved in the teeny weeny details of the construction, chances are you’d end up with a house with sub-standard materials. But then of course, this also has a lot of advantages, since you don’t have to worry about buying your own bricks, cement, steel and other materials like stainless steel drums, flooring tiles etc..So you save precious time.

Another option you can take is to hire laborers and a foreman. This is the option we always take whenever we have construction needs. Luckily, Hi-ace has one really good friend who has a group of construction laborers. They don’t come really cheap but their work is really good and very reliable. In this case, you provide the materials, and they just do the constructing bit. So you have complete control over the material quality, the costs, but it also demands a lot of time. Materials are really expensive here in Phnom Penh so it pays so shop around and be cost-effective.

In any case, building a house or even a fence for that matter is a huge thing. It’s not something like buying a tv set, where if you don’t like it you can simply ditch or replace it. So whichever way you go, make sure that you end up with a finished product that is worth the money you paid for.

Yesterday, we were supposed to be looking for some new tv stands after visiting a travel agency to make travel arrangements, but we ended up just driving around, then going to the supermarket then piling up on pastries. Ugh, really really bad for me but Hi-ace was on his element trying {and totally succeeding} to make me eat some calorie laden muffins and doughnuts.

Since the shopping trip was postponed yesterday, I decided to go this morning not for tv stands though since I prefer to have Hi-ace when I buy that, and since he’s in Takeo province today, it was just me doing a bit of shopping in where else but Russian Market (Psar Tuol Tompong). I didn’t really have a clue what to buy and I was thinking of buying a pair of sandals but I didn’t like what I was in the stalls. I ended up wandering about the market when one seller called me. I remembered she lives a few doors down from my mother-in-law’s flat and she asked me to have a look at the new things she’s selling..

My, my! Really nice swimwear and lingerie, which is really hard to find around Phnom Penh. I bought a few Merona tankini’s to give to my friends and some Gap bra’s (and no they are not fake, all authentic!!). How much? $6 for the tankini’s and $5 for a lacy bra in nude color. All a steal with those prices considering that Merona tankini’s retails from $15 – $40..

Here’s just some:

She has this really small shop and I tend to overlook it with all the other shops crammed about the market but it was a great find! She has a lot of branded lingerie, bikinis, swimwear, sleepwear and tank tops. And she gives a fair price too and is not really scary to bargain with.

Several stalls down I also bought a sexy little tankini for Chinks for only $3..
