money-bank1Lately, I’ve been thinking more frequently about life, getting old, what the future will hold. At times I could be flighty and tend to have a happy-go-lucky attitude towards life and old age. But ever since I had a baby, I have been thinking more and more of being practical and ensuring financial security for myself and my family.

Here in Cambodia, when you work for local companies, there isn’t much in terms of social security benefits. My husband is a professor and works for a government school and also lectures at private universities. Though the salary is relatively high compared to other lecturers in other Asian countries, the downside is that when you retire there really isn’t much benefit you can get, or if you get sick there is no medical insurance you can depend on.

That’s why we are thinking of getting a life and medical insurance and probably set up a trust fund for our daughter. There isn’t much life insurance companies around here for now so we’d have to do more research on that and find a good and reliable life insurance lead.

I’m also maintaining my Social Security System membership in the Philippines and right now I’m contributing as a voluntary/self-employed member. At least, when I retire I could expect some medical and pension benefits.

Being financially secured is one of our top priorities right now while were young, healthy and able to work. At least in the event of emergency we have something and we could hopefully retire with some peace of mind.
