SickI often feel so distressed and freaked out whenever my child gets sick. She rarely gets sick and the usual sickness would be coughs, colds and occasional fever. It really pains me to see my child get sick and not her usual active self. This usually happens during rainy season. More often than not a sick child can give mom and dad stress and a scare. Here’s some tips on how to prepare for colds and illnesses and help your child get better as quick as possible.

  • At the onset of rainy season, check out your medicine cabinet. Restock with the usual medicines you use (Paracetamol, Cold/Cough Medicine, etc.).
  • Make sure you throw out expired medications.
  • Do some research about medicine recalls. Be informed about over the counter medicines and if there are special advisories regarding them.
  • Have a handy list of phone numbers of your pediatrician, dentist, and persons to be contacted in case of illness. Make sure you put it in a prominent place.

  • Update yourself also with your child’s weight. Most of kids medication are based on how much they weigh. If you child has allergies make sure you have it recorded as well as past medications. Doctors usually ask for this during check-ups.
  • Rainy season could also bring water-borne diseases especially those in flood-prone areas. Be on the lookout for food contamination, cholera, typhoid fever, leptospirosis, diarrhea, and gastritis and take precautions and practice proper hygiene.
  • Make sure you also have bandages, hot or cold packs, medicine measure (calibrated spoon), a thermometer, tissues, cotton, petroleum jelly.
