Math Learning Programs in the Philippines

I’m lousy in math and I’ve been thinking that I hated the subject because I’ve been conditioned to think its difficult. But I don’t want my child to be “math phobic” so I’m seriously considering enrolling her to an after school program with innovative math learning programs.

These programs are steadily gaining popularity because of their innovative ways to improve math learning experience.

Kumon LogoIt is reputed to be the world’s bigest after school mathematics and language learning program. This method was established in 1954 by Toru Kumon of Japan.

The method of curriculum has a very linear approach to learning. Once a concept is introduced with simple exercises, the difficulty level gradually increases in very small, incremental steps. The program has 23 study levels of 20 units per level.

Advantages:

  • Individualized study plan – No two students are alike. Each one has a different set of abilities and vary on how they learn. In Kumon, children learn at their own pace.
  • easy starting point – After taking the Diagnostic Test, the child will begin at a level most comfortable for him. This level is called the Easy Starting Point.
  • promotes self-learning and self-discipline – This is achieved through the design of the Kumon worksheets. The Kumon worksheets provide examples and are designed in minute steps so that in each lesson, the child can encounter a little of the new and a lot of the familiar.
  • cultivates advanced skills above school level -Mastery is developed in Kumon through practice. Repetition of worksheets help train the child to master each topic and achieving a perfect score before proceeding to the next topic.

SAKAMOTO – method developed by Dr. Hideo Sakamoto of Japan in 1980. Designed for elementary pupils, the technique puts emphasis on the understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
Method: The SAKAMOTO Math method consists of three simple yet systematic steps (grasping the relation, diagram and writing) that provide structured technique in analyzing and solving questions easily and logically. Rather than rote learning, emphasis is on problem solving and the understanding of concepts and applications.

Advantages: Develops logical, creative and analytical thinking skills; uses original and unique teaching materials and worksheets.
