women on the netI am an avid surfer and lately I have noticed the growing presence of women and mom bloggers on the net. More and more researches are now confirming how women are making their presence known on the world wide web. In a survey conducted by Burst Media, they found that 51.7% of Internet users are women and the numbers are still growing.

In 2006 the numbers of women online in the US alone reaches a total of 93.9 million compared to 88 million male users. eMarketer says that currently there are around 97.2 million female internet users and the numbers are expected to rise to 109.7 million in 2011, constituting 51.9 % of the total online population.

Their research also shows that 54.5% of female online users depend on the internet for their primary source of information and more than 32 million moms in the US go online everyday and the number is expected to rise by 14 % in the next 5 years.

MediaBuyerPlanner also found that in 2006, 88% of moms depends on online magazines for parental guidance and advice and 86% of them make regular online purchases. Women online are now considered a large and very influential group. Women are the usual decision makers when it comes to household and home purchases, that is why it is hardly surprising that sites targeted on women are cropping up like mushrooms. Sites like iVillage, GoodHousekeeping, BellaOnline, and just recently Yahoo launched their women-targeted site, Shine.

A marketing research services company, Perseus, indicated that 56% of all blogs are created by women and that women abandon fewer blogs than men do. Since there are a lot of women bloggers around now, its hardly surprising to find blog lists/directories dedicated to women and mom bloggers – BlogHer, WomenBloggersWebrings, and even a Womens Blog Ad Network!

Women blog for different reasons, some to express themselves, to meet and network with people, to earn a bit on the side but whatever the reason a woman starts a blog it can present a lot of good things for a woman-blogger. Blogging helps develops skills and opens opportunities. Blogs have helped women find their voices. We can be mom’s, wives, daughters, girlfriends, we can do well at work, now we have another world to conquer.
