Living in Phnom Penh: Khmer New Year, Almost!

Yay! Time for my random blurbs. Why is it that now that I am doubly busy, I am more motivated to blog? I’m weird like that. Or perhaps I just have a lot of stories struggling to be told. Hahaha. I know it sounds serious but what I have are just mundane everyday stuff.

  • Phnom Penh was in a bit of a frenzy this past week. The ASEAN Summit was held here so traffic jams, soldiers in full uniforms, attentive police (for once!), journalists, convoys abound. Some universities were told to suspend classes to lessen the traffic jams. And I did have a lot of fun getting stuck in the traffic and watch out for those wang wangs and diplomatic bigwigs and their convoys.
  • And yup, a big indicator if there are some foreign dignitaries/visitors in this country: lots and lots of flags scattered throughout the city. Here’s a big lot of them in front of Chaktomouk Theatre along Sisowath Quay.

  • I’m very very excited. Why? Khmer New Year is almost upon us and I’m always happy when it comes around. Not that I would stop working on my online projects and blogging, but the one week vacation would be a wonderful reprieve for me. And besides hubby and the kiddo won’t have work/school so we’ll all be together. We might go somewhere else for some R & R but at this time our plans are fluid. Bwahaha.. It’s subject to change and follow our whims.
  • My Khmer language classes are going really well. You won’t believe how happy I was the first time I was able to read a sentence written in Khmer. I was practically giddy, I dunno why. Perhaps because I have always thought this language is difficult to learn and here I am actually making some progress in learning it. As of now, I only know about 15 consonants and a couple of vowels and I still have a long long way to go, but right now I’m all positive I could do it.
  • Going back to school, even if its just a short course, is bringing some excitement back in my life. Not that my life now is not exciting but I kinda feel old. But going to school and seeing kids like these in the photos makes me feel a bit younger. Ha! I think there really is some truth to some advice I heard or read before that when you surround yourself with young ‘uns you’ll feel younger. See.. The snapshot below looks idyllic. Sigh.

Some Things I Just Don’t Get

I was sitting, staring at some classified ads from BongThom.com, a popular Khmer classified ads website. I’ve been browsing it for some ideas on real estate coz I wanted to have some ideas about current prices. I’ve decided to make  a long-term goal to buy another lot a little farther from the Phnom Penh city (maybe on the outskirts) and build another house maybe in the next ten years hehe..

The way Phnom Penh is going right now with the construction boom, its an easy guess that the city will be bursting, and expanding really fast. So, were thinking of getting some place a little farther out but still accessible to the city. I want one where I could have a garden..

But I digress, this post is really about Hi-ace. I was reading the ads, when he gave me a nudge and asked me to move over coz he saw something interesting. It’s  pretty easy for me to guess what he’ll be looking at – cars for sale!

That’s one of those things I just don’t get about guys (and really I don’t wanna bother understanding now..), well most of them are so into cars. Hi-ace wants to buy one. But we’ve been stalling coz our house right now does not have a parking space and we have to rent a parking spot some hundred meters from the house. Another reason is the budget. We’ll be doing a some traveling this year, plus he’ll be in another country for a few months so I prefer to have some funds to back me up.

I realize its a necessity here in Phnom Penh but I told him to just hold out and perhaps we could look for one when he gets back in December or early next year. I think I’d want to look at second-hand cars first, maybe Corolla foreclosures so we can get the best value?

Hayy! What is it with guys and cars anyway? It’s like they have this special relationship while for me, I’m really not that into it. The way I see it, its just a way to get from point A to point B. That’s it. While, Hi-ace.. he’s really into it.. hmm..Maybe I should just buy him a toy car eh?

A Laid-Back Weekend..

I had a really good and fun weekend and thinking about it, living in Phnom Penh have mellowed me down a bit. Before in Manila, I used to be always out and about, rarely staying in the house, always stressed out about business, the traffic and the smog. That’s what I love about Phnom Penh now, life is at an unhurried pace, I get to have leisurely walks, coffee and gossip with Filipina friends, explore Phnom Penh’s bargain havens. In short, I’m more relaxed now, enjoying and appreciating things the way they should be enjoyed. But be forewarned, I’m in a story-telling mood, so this post is rather long..

Friday..

Capuccino @ Brown Cafe Phnom PenhMet the Fabulous Pinay’s of Phnom Penh (haha! yeah I call them that..) Zarah, Josiet, and Che (blog ka na ulit, Che so I could link :P ) @ our now fave hangout Brown Cafe. After about 2 hours of girl talk, we all decided to have lunch at Khmer restaurant – Sugar Palm along St 240. Hmmm, food was bland and a bit pricey so I must say I have tasted better stuff. But then again, the company was great so I forgot about the not-so-good food.

After lunch, we went off to check boutiques along St. 240. Love this street, definitely a fashionista’s haven with elegant boutiques and Cambodian silk and product stores along the sides. Then, we checked Diva boutique along St. 57 , well a bit pricey but they do carry  a good selection of brands like Bebe, Guess etc, though they tend to stock on teeny weeny sizes.

After Diva, we all went different ways and Che invited me to meet her cutie daughter Isabelle. Their place is just a few meters walk so I happily agreed. Met the pretty doll-like Isabelle. I also got to hitch-hike home with Che’s nice help, Pheary who lives near my place. That must be my lucky day =).

Pan Pizza @ Pizza World Phnom PenhAfter a few hours rest at home, my sister wanted to check out City Mall, Phnom Penh’s latest shopping heavyweight, right beside Olympic Stadium. We roamed around the mall, and seriously, I’ve been there a couple of times, but the layout still mystify’s me and I always manage to get lost several times each visit. We got so exhausted and ended up having dinner at Pizza World coz Chinks was demanding to eat spaghetti..

Keeping Hi-Ace Healthy

I’ve been trying to get Hi-ace to not forget taking his daily vitamin supplement. I must admit I’m a bit of a nag when it comes to this coz he does keep forgetting to take it.I know he eats healthy, he doesn’t smoke and rarely drinks. In fact, I’m even better at holding heavy drinks than him :P .

But since he is always busy, he says his job is stressful – students probably trying to raise his blood pressure coupled with his office work. His day is really so hectic at times he could barely sit down for lunch before heading off to some lecture or meeting. He doesn’t even have time to exercise, so among us its him who easily gets sick. And that worries me a lot, of course.

I’ve also gotten him to drink non-fat milk daily which he does that now without complaints. And I’m thinking he should be getting an annual general health exam. I know I’m such a worrier but hey! it’s my husband’s health after all. You know I don’t wanna get the scare again like last time he had this terrible gastic ulcer right after we arrived here in Phnom Penh. That was an experience I was totally unprepared to handle.

Anyway, another reason I want to get him to learn new healthy habits is that he’ll probably go somewhere for some leadership training next year and since I won’t be there to err nag him, so he has to get into a more proper routine already.

I’m probably distressing about something I should not be distressing about, but anyway I’m still doing some more reading, and checking out sites about healthy eating, health products, supplements, fitness etc.

Cambodia’s Wild East – Mondulkiri: Trip Chronicles 1

When Hi-ace (for new readers, Hi-ace is a nickname I gave hubby because of his fondness for the Toyota Hi-ace van :D ), asked me if I wanted to tag along with some teachers and students from Pannasastra University whose going to Mondulkiri Province for an outreach project, of course, the wanderlust in me couldn’t say no.

We’ve always been planning to explore and visit this province in Northeastern Cambodia but it never came to be a reality till now. What held us back before is that there are currently no regular bus service and the other alternative is to take share taxis. At the same time, some people told us about the “not-so-good” road conditions going there. Traveling with a small group made sense so we decided to go with the PUC group.

We left early Friday morning in a leased tourist bus. There were about 20 of us, all excited to see what Mondulkiri is all about. Of course, the group’s main aim there is to help out several schools particularly the Sen Monorom School in Sen Monorom as well as the primary school for the Pnong tribes in Putang, Mondulkiri. Aside from cash donations, the students and the teachers also had loads of school materials to give out so the bus was pretty loaded.

We were praying for good weather and thankfully it has been answered. No rains and sun was shining though it was not scorchingly hot. The roads up to certain parts were paved and all the rest were descent enough dirt roads. Except for one part were there were a lot of stranded big vehicles so we had to get down and walk for a few meters, it was altogther a pretty easy going trip.

I was also concerned about the restrooms on the stopovers, but surprisingly all places we’ve stopped had numerous and clean restrooms. I particularly like the 88 Restaurant, coz the restrooms were spacious, have a lot of water, and though the toilet was squat type (and my daughter kept bugging me how to use it :D ) it was nonetheless clean and not smelly.

As we neared Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri’s provincial capital, we had to stop again because two huge buldozers were “conveniently” parked along the road and we couldn’t pass through because our bus is a few inches taller than they allowed. The caretaker unfortunately didn’t have the key and the Chinese owner is having a leisurely lunch so we had to wait around 2 hours. So the students instead just sang songs and joked around. I find Khmers very good natured and cheerful whatever the circumstance is and they keep joking that indeed Cambodia is the “kingdom of wonder” because things happen that make you wonder why it happened. After the Chinese guy came and we were allowed to go through, it was then a laid back trip to Sen Monorom. The trip lasted around 7 hours, not counting the time we stopped over for meals and when we were stranded.

Mondulkiri Cambodia

pine and grass covered hills, red earth and blue skies..

Mondulkiri is definitely a world apart from Phnom Penh and other Cambodian provinces in terms of the landscape, the climate and the culture. The average elevation in this province is 800 m so the breeze is cool and could be chilly at night.

Mondulkiri means “the Meeting of Hills” and I couldn’t think of a much more fitting name. This is a land of rolling hills, emerald valleys, pine trees and waterfalls. I feel like my amateur photography skills couldn’t do justice to what I was seeing. Endless green, azure skies, and a uniquely red earth soil is what I’d forever recall about Mondulkiri. The province is so sparsely populated and the number of houses along the way is so few, making the grassy hills and the greens more prominent.

Glittering Vegas..

lasvegassignI want to visit Las Vegas.. Yep! Las Vegas in known to offer one of the best spots for gaming, dining, shopping, entertainment so I’m more or less guaranteed to have a “wild experience”. I have no idea what to do in a casino, I don’t play cards, or do any gambling except maybe bet in the lottery once a year, yet there is something about Las Vegas that draws me. I’m even obsessive about CSI Las Vegas..

The colors, the sights, the people. Definitely a fascinating place to visit. Perhaps soon and wish I could get to stay in a luxury hotel with an observation deck with a 360-degree view like the Stratosphere hotel.
