Went Shopping…

Another living in Phnom Penh post. But I forgot to take photos coz I left the cam at home. But I promise, when I go back to Olympic Market I’ll be taking photos and will update this post. See, hubby and I have been on the ‘save as much as we can’ mood. We have a lot of expenses and a lot of them we could cut and a big part of the budget goes to groceries. We have a house construction in planning and a few travel dates so we want to save.

Olympic Market Phnom Penh

I remembered before when we first stayed here in Phnom Penh for a few months (2004) we used to frequent Olympic Market and buy wholesale. We got this tip from my sister-in-law. She has a grocery store and she knows a lot of wholesalers in Olympic Market and told us to buy direct from there and we could get big savings. True that! That time we used to buy a big can of milk for $17 in the supermarkets but in Olympic it was about $12. If we buy half-dozen we get to save about $40! And before you ask if they are for real, well they have the same supplier as with the supermarkets.

Now we asked ourselves since there are stuff we need in big quantities why don’t we do that again. So we went there this morning. Bought a box (12) of fresh milk and saved $5. We also bought stuff the kiddo likes eating – crackers, yogurt milk, etc. All items are cheaper by about $0.50 to $1 so if you buy more = big savings.

I’m feeling high actually. I love shopping like this. And though the place is not aircon, its actually spacious and well ventilated compared to other markets here. For sure I’ll be hopping there again. I wanna buy green cleaning supplies, a weighing scale, kitchen stuff.

Shopping in Phnom Penh: A Red Bag

Shopping in Phnom Penh

I love bargain hunting! In fact, I’m an UK (ukay-ukay/second hand) connoisseur. I used to lament the fact that there are no decent shopping malls here, but once I discovered some fabulous bargain hunting grounds, I’m now more than okay. And besides, things are now improving with new malls and boutiques sprouting here and there, with each new mall  getting bigger than the last one. Where before I couldn’t find an ATM machine, now these are everywhere and prepaid visa card/debit cards are now gaining some following. So a few more years and PP will be a shopping haven for a shopping crazy girl like me..

Anyway, one of my favorite bargain hunting ground is Japan Thrift shop along St. 47. I’m usually there every weekend and even Hi-ace have caught the Japan Thrift bug. Two Saturdays ago, we went there again, and I scored this red Soco bag. I love it!!! Just what I really like. Lots of compartments, big enough to put a laptop in. And it hasn’t even been used.  Original tag price, plus those foamy fillers they put inside the compartments were still there.

Best of all, I got it for a super steal price – $1.25! I guess I got lucky.. I also saw a cute ice blue Nine West clutch bag for only $.75 and I really regret not grabbing it too. I was too enamored with the red bag that I forgot the blue one was a cool find too.. Hmm, I’ll visit JT again next week..

Shopping in Phnom Penh: Brand Name Goodies From Russian Market

Just recently I received two emails from soon-to-be Phnom Penh visitors asking about shopping in Phnom Penh. Both also mentioned the Russian Market and what they could buy from there aside from the usual souvenirs. I had been thinking of updating my ‘Shopping in Phnom Penh‘ category but I keep forgetting. Now that I’d been prompted I’ll be regularly posting stuff I score from Phnom Penh’s shopping grounds.

Shopping in Phnom Penh

Russian Market or Tuol Tompong Market is my favorite market in all of Phnom Penh. In fact, I go there almost three times a week! The market itself is nothing interesting architecturally, just a bunch of stalls put together but really its what you can discover inside that makes it a really popular place to shop.

I shop there for fresh produce. It’s the best place for buying Cambodian silks, carvings and quality Khmer souvenir items. Lots of Cd’s and DVD movies there. If you are also the adventurous sort when it comes to food, then the food hall in the middle of the market is one place to sample the local Khmer fare.

This market also holds a secret loot of brand name clothing from various factories across Phnom Penh. Over runs, excess stuff from factories making clothes for  Department store brands like Kmart, Target etc can be found here and at just about 10% of its SRP! Gap, Abercrombie, H & M, Calvin Klein, Lee, Adidas and a lot more brands can be found here and its easy to go shopping crazy because they are so cheap!

Beware though, Russian Market is super hot and you have to squeeze yourselves in the narrow passages between stalls but its totally worth it! I usually go there around 9-10 am when the heat is still bearable and around 1-2 pm also is a good time if don’t like crowds. If the heat is really unbearable then there’s a new air-conditioned store right across the street from the market called WExport, but you’ll pay a premium price for a little blast of cool air.

Anyway, I bought these things from the Russian Market last March, mostly casual items I could use for the summer. Just so you have an idea what else you can find there..

Lee Capri Pants and Merona pants (Coral) – $4 each.

Russian Market Finds

Kipling Backpack (large) – $8 (You can also buy Northface bags at similar prices. Vendor’s usually quote $12 for a large backpack but haggle, haggle, haggle. If you buy more you can probably get it for less than $8. These are from Vietnam but curiously they sell almost at the same prices at times lower than in Ben Thanh Market in HCM)

Kipling slingbag/beltbag – $4

Will post more items soon..

Living in Phnom Penh: Last Week In Review

I know I’ve been on a blogging roll the past few days and I had been churning out at least one post a day for this blog. I am in a blogging mood and I had been all so motivated to write for some reason..Anyway, this is just a update on what I had been up to the last couple of days..

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

Met the fabulous Pinays of Phnom Penh ;) last Monday. Had coffee and muffins again @ Brown Cafe plus lots of girl talk. Thanks Che for the muffins! That didn’t end there, we also had lunch in Sofia’s Kitchen where the food is good and so affordable. Next stop was K-four Appliance Center for some appliance browsing, which reminded me I still have to work on and buy that LCD TV to replace the bedroom TV I accidentally dropped a few months back. We then went to Golden Sorya Mall, a new shopping complex near Central Market and Sorya Mall. Browsed all stalls, hehe didn’t buy a thing then we went to T & C cafe near Pencil Supermarket for more chikahan. I love days like this, its not often but yeah its a big deal for me to be able to get some free time for myself and just to have some girl bonding times with my friends. And for me, Phnom Penh is really a more fun place because of these fabulous ladies..

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

Tuesday was a busy day. Some errands to run here and there. I also had to do some grocery shopping. I also resumed doing my regular cardio exercises since I’ve been trying to lose some stubborn pounds. Imho, getting regular exercise and a healthy diet I think is way much better than phentermine diet pills. I’ve also been searching the net for some light exercise instructions and I’ve printed it out. Bought myself some light weights too because I want to tone some of my flabby extras.

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

Wednesday, Ouwie and I decided to go on a shopping trip to the Russian Market. I can’t find my backpack bag and I’ll be needing one sometime soon. So we headed over to Tuol Tompong Market about 9 am and whew! it was already jam packed with tourists and locals doing their shopping. We headed over to the clothing overruns section and got myself a Kipling Bag (L) for only $8 and another Kipling sling bag convertible to belt bag too for only $4. We browsed the market some more and I also got some comfy Lee Riders capri pants for only $5 each. After an hour I really couldn’t take the heat inside the market anymore so we headed over to Cafe Yeji just around the corner. After a refreshing drink we browsed the art galleries near the market..Will post the photos of my buys soon. I have yet to download them from my camera. I’ve started a ‘Shopping in Phnom Penh’ category and will be featuring bargain haunts and best buys around Phnom Penh. Soon. Continue reading

Living in Phnom Penh: Lazy, Happy Weekend

Leisurely Saturday..

I love weekends like this. Just doing nothing, spending the day with Hi-ace, Chinks and Ouwie. It rarely happens that all of us are not busy, more often than not we have someplace else to go even during weekends. Hi-ace didn’t have any meetings, trips or classes. When its like this we take advantage of the time to just be together.

Yesterday morning was spent just lazing around, sleeping till 8 am, eating a leisurely breakfast, then we played board games. Afternoon we spent biking around Phnom Penh. It’s been awhile since we’ve done this and I had a fun time. We also brought Chinks to the bookstore since she had been asking for some art supplies.

We also browsed those sidestreet vendors along Monivong Blvd., offering printing of business cards and wedding invitations. We both want to have some printed and those sidestreet sellers are really offering value for printing services. 100 pcs of business cards cost just less than $10 depending on the design and you can also have your own design printed for an additional fee. As for the wedding invitations, hmm they have a wide variety of designs some amusing, some cute, some very elaborate and some really with lots of embellishments. I didn’t inquire about the price though hehe..

Sunday shopping..

Hi-ace and Chinks went with Ma to visit their uncle in Kandal province. They left about 6:30 am so I had some free time to do some shopping. Food shopping was done first, of course, in Russian Market (Phsar Toul Tompong). Got our week’s supply of vegetables, meat, fish and fruits. Shopping in local markets is now a breeze for me, I already have regular suki vendors so I get a good price plus freebies.Ouwie and I also roamed around the clothing section coz I was planning to buy some tank tops. The summer heat is getting unbearable so I wanted to have some cotton shirts. After browsing several stalls I found myself buying stuff for Chinks instead. Bought her a couple of shirts and I also found lots of cute swimwear and I also got her some since she’s taking swimming lessons already in school.

10:30 am, the market was already crowded so Ouwie and I decided to escape from the crowds and headed for a cup of coffee at the Coffee Korner just off the Russian Market. This has already been our favorite coffee place after doing our shopping rounds of Phsar Tuol Tompong.

Hi-ace and Chinks got back around 12 noon, so now were all lazing around again. Me, writing this really lazy post, Hi-ace watching TV, Chinks tumbling around the floor and Ouwie reading a book. Wish every weekend would be like this haha! I should really get back to reality..

Living in Phnom Penh: Post-Holiday Rush

Things are pretty hectic for me at this time, so I haven’t been blogging regularly the past week and maybe till next week. Though spending the holidays here in Phnom Penh is a bit quieter compared to Manila but still things got a bit busy with eating here and there, meeting friends, doing shopping, cooking and once it was all over, I was just so exhausted that I needed to take a few days off, then I got some mild stomach flu two days ago which made things more difficult.

BusyWe had also been busy adding additional furnishings to our house. Bought another bed for my sister whose coming over. Also looked for some concrete benches to place outside our yard which could be really handy if we want to have a picnic outside. We’ve also done a bit of window shopping for some ligthing fixtures and I’m a little taken with Golden lighting though nothing has been decided yet.

We’ll probably be out again within this week because Hi-ace wants to have a new air conditioner installed in our room because summer is fast approaching and he can imagine me and Chinks already freaking out with too much heat and sweating.

We’re also looking out for some upholstery services coz we want to have a custom-made living room set made. The one’s we have right now is not working for us coz we got a very limited space and considering the paper and book clutter we currently have we really want a sofa set that could better complement several bookshelves around our living area. We’ve moved around furniture stores last week and we can’t find a set that would best suit the dimensions of our space so we’re just thinking of having one custom-made.

On top of all those, I also have lots of web projects currently on the works and I’m way behind the schedule I set last October so I’m trying to get back on track with all those. So, I may neglect this blog for the meantime and just drop a post now and then this January..

Seriously, I’m almost as frazzled as this one..
